Matsu felt a shudder run through the demon he was fighting, fear spread across his face, and Matsu’s heart leapt, a murmur ran through the assembled demons, ‘The pretender was dead’ The demons were still fighting but it was with a sense of desperation rather than any hope. Their will power fled and with the aid of the royal guard they were soon defeated. The hunter looked around at the crumbled hall, bodies of both hunters and demons lay scattered here and there, and though a happy cry went up from the remaining ones, for Matsu it felt like a hollow victory. Aiba was leaning heavily on Sakurai, blood dripping from a wound on his chest
“Are you...”
“I’ll be fine” Aiba said with a slight smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes “It’s over?”
“Akanishi is dead” The all turned and saw Toma, Maru and Matthew come into the hall
“Toma...”
“Toma’s gone” Yamapi told him in a whisper, his voice close to breaking, Matsu stared at him not knowing what to say, it was still Toma’s body but Yamapi was using it. The hunter tried to ignore how weird that thought was, the expression on Yamapi/Toma’s face must mirror the one on his own.
“So it’s over?” The hunters asked, Maru, Yamapi and Matthew shook their heads,
“No, the unholy king is awake” Yamapi said “As long as Nino is alive it won’t be over”
“It’s time, isn’t it?” Matsu murmured and the other nodded their gazes sad but determined. Matsu realised that every one of them here was connected to Nino and he knew none of them wanted this out come any more than he did and when it was done they would all going to miss Nino in their own ways.
“You’d better go...” Yamapi was saying “I have to organize the royal guard”
They nodded running to the courtyard, it was then that Matsu saw that Arashi, his faithful horse hadn’t survived the battle, his heart made a funny movement in his chest as he looked at the horse; it was as if everything he cared about was being ripped away from him in one day. He stroked its mane gently, pushing away the tears that had formed in his eyes, he turned when he felt something nuzzling at his neck, he turned and was surprised to see Niji staring at him, lowering his front legs to allow him to climb on.
Nino sat on the cliff looking out over the battlefield, the pretender was dead, and he should feel uplifted but instead there was something else, something that he was forgetting but he didn’t want to forget. The face rose up in his mind again, this time lingering on the last one; his heart ached as he tried to remember why those faces were so important. He let out a loud shriek wanting to push those faces away ‘Nino’ a voice called softly; he frowned again, wondering why that name, he was positive it was a name, why did it hurt him. That last face, why did the fact a mortal was crying upset him. He wanted to be able to reach out, to tell him everything was going to be okay. ‘My Nino’. The unholy king growled again, flapping his wings he launched himself into the sky, flying away, hoping to get rid of the images that were plaguing him.
“He’s flying away” Aiba said looking at the figure in the distance refusing to believe that it was his dad; his dad had died in the halls. Matsu urged Niji forwards surprised that the horse was listening to him; he had felt sure the beast demon would have gone after Nino. Then he remembered what Nino had said that day when they had met Sakurai, ‘Remember your first duty is to our master’. The beast demon was just following his orders; Matsu’s patted the beast neck lightly knowing that Niji really did care about his true master, leathery wing ripped out as if in response reminding Matsu that Niji was a true beast demon and not just a horse. He wondered if that meant he would be cast into the other world, he made a mental note to ask Maru if the horse would be allowed in the world he was going to create for the loyal demons. If they had to be loyal to Nino none fit better than Niji. He looked up into the sky realising that Nino had vanished; he looked at Maru who swore lightly
“This is going to be impossible”
“Not quite” Matthew said with a smile appearing at his side riding on the jet black horse from before
“I thought you weren’t meant to be helping...”
“I’m not I’m just helping my brother and his friends save their horses” Death said with a shrug, “I’m not interfering...”
“Much” Maru mumbled and then closed his eyes “If you’re going to do it...”
Matsu heard Matthew give a low chuckle and then his stomach lurched as the scenery changed and they had left the battle filled streets and were in a peaceful clearing. Matsu looked around as he climbed off Niji trying to steady his stomach, he remembered this place from Nino’s memories, and this was the river bank where he had first met Ohno but that was thousands of years ago, it was impossible that it was still the same, Matthew gave a small laugh at his confusion “After the 1st left Nino asked me if I would seal this place ‘Out of time’ that one day Ohno would be back and would want to use it again..” Death explained “This is where Nino will be...”
“But this place is meaningless to him... He isn’t Nino anymore”
“No, he isn’t, he has a vague memory though... Just pieces that he can’t place together, he hates them...” Maru told him looking around, looking a little woozy
“How do you know that?”
“I’m just guessing” Maru shrugged and Matsu sensed it was a lie. He was reminded yet again that the man in front of him was the trickster; the hunters at one point had feared him almost as much as they feared Nino. Maru shifted under his gaze and then let out a sigh “I’ve been in the same position as Nino once... After Kame was destroyed I lost myself for awhile...”
“A while?” Matthew said with a raised eyebrow “It was 557 years, 4 months and 2 days”
“You know sometimes you don’t have to be so correct” Maru sighed touching his nose lightly while glaring at his half brother, Matthew shrugged leaning on his scythe “It’s not the best feeling in the world... Everything you care about is gone...”
“But if Nino got you back...” Aiba murmured softly
“This isn’t about getting Nino back that is impossible...” Maru said “If we bring Nino back nothing will have changed, the kings will still be gone, and the demons will still be out of control... Everything you’ve done over the past few days would have been for nothing...”
Matsu stared at him knowing he was right, but knowing that didn’t make it any easier, Aiba was fighting back a sob, Sakurai gently stroking his lover back trying to reassure him. Maru looked a little guilty but his eyes stayed steady. For some reason Matsu got the impression the trickster was following some kind of orders from Nino and that gave the hunter a warm feeling in his chest like even now Nino was watching over him. He was about to voice his opinion when there was a loud crack of thunder and the ground trembled under their feet. “He’s here” Maru said softly.
Nino found himself in the clearing he didn’t know why he had come here but it was like something was pulling at his soul dragging him to this spot, he looked around trying to find some reason as to why he would be pulled to such a boring spot, it had no connection to him at all, but he could sense a strange power radiating all around him. He wanted to feed but he couldn’t he had passed over villages to get here but those faces were blocking him not wanting to see pain in those pretty proud eyes. He clicked his fingers in frustration the sound of thunder soothing his soul, flapping his wings he looked around and was mildly surprised to see what looked like a hunter with a group staring up at him. Fire bubbled in his heart as he pulled his staff out of the air, he was finally free there was no way a hunter could beat him, he thought, his mouth turning up in a twisted smile. He raised the staff in the air a series of lightning strikes hitting the ground around the hunter’s party, the unholy king let out a laugh as he watched them scatter, the hunter summoned a water and fire shield at the same time. The magic was impressive but pointless; he was going to enjoy ripping the hunter to pieces, maybe he would feed on the hunters power levels. He thought as thunder cracked loudly around them.
Matsu dodged the attack, he heart hammering against his chest as he summoned his protective shields around the party. He heard Nino give a laugh and Matsu clutched the pendent tightly, steadying himself before he summoned a wave of water, Nino moved easily out of the way, and Matsu cursed the fact he couldn’t fly, just as he was thinking that Niji appeared at his side, his own leathery wings shining in the pale sunlight. Without thinking too much Matsu climbed on to the beast demons back and they were soon lifted into the air and flying towards Nino. He could hear the demons low laugh as he approached; they stared at each other for a moment
“Wow... What a pretty hunter” The king said, Matsu felt his heart break at the use of that nickname. It sounded so hateful coming from the kings’ lips. “Pity that it is time for you to die...Unless... Would you join me pretty hunter?” Matsu stared at him, he looked nothing like his Nino but the energy felt the same, it was the same bratty tongue. He was tempted to say ‘Yes’ and then he felt the cold weight of Nino’s pendent around his neck, and he was reminded that this wasn’t his Nino. He tilted his head face up so Nino could see his face and neck more clearly and Nino wasn’t sure which affected him most, the fact that the face was the one that had been plaguing him or the mark on his neck “The un-ruled hunter... Are you here to kill me pretty hunter?” He asked managing not to show any of his internal battle, the hunter’s eyes trembled with sadness, and the king had to force himself from stroking at the sad face. The voice that came out though was edged with cold determination
“Yes... It is time for you to die” He said, Nino let out a roar of laughter
“When I beat you I will keep you as my pet” He snapped raising his staff high, Niji dodged the attack with ease, as steady in the air as he was on the ground and Matsu was positive no matter what the horse wouldn’t let him fall. He clicked his fingers a wave of water washing out while Nino countered with fire. As the battle went on, Matsu was reminded of the training sessions he had undergone with Nino and he realised he had been training him for this, battle. During those matches Nino had told him all of his weaknesses; he used them against him now. The unholy king roared loudly as he was hit, repeatedly, every move he made the hunter was ready, as if he was reading his mind, what was worse was he could feel his power being stripped away, his hissed as he saw his own pendent around the hunters neck. Another image tried to force its way into his mind before he could stop it. He was giving the pendent... Why would he... To a mortal... He refused to believe it, but there it was around the hunters’ neck. He dove forwards trying to grab at the pendent but the beast the hunter rode was too quick moving him to safety. Nino growled again thunder rocking through the air as lightning hit the horse and his rider knocking them to the floor. Matsu let out a soft moan, he could feel his magic ebbing away he needed help, Niji was stumbling to his feet, Matsu clutched at the pendent tightly and then was surprised as a sword came held by water. He was sure he had seen it before, in the battle between Nino and Ohno, it was the firsts sword, Matsu gripping it tightly feeling more energy wash into him he patted Niji’s back, sharing some with the beast. Niji let out an almost grateful whine, and allowed the hunter to climb back up as the rose into the sky again
Nino blinked when he saw the sword positive it had been used on him before, he didn’t have time to even try and think and the hunters attacks came quicker and stronger than before. The sky became dark around them and the stars shone brightly, both were heaving sweat glistening on their bodies, both more tired than they had ever felt before but still they fought. Nino grinned as he saw an opening and lunged forwards. Matsu let out a loud groan as he was ripped from Niji’s back, flown high into the air and then slammed down onto the soft ground, trying to keep his grip on the first’s sword.
Nino grabbed the hunter his hand gripping at his throat tightly, wanting to feel the life slip away, to leave this man who’s face tormented him so much.
“Nino” The hunter groaned looking up at him, Nino felt his grip loosen around the hunter’s throat allowing him more room to breathe, and Matsu coughed as air flooded into his lungs. Nino stared at the hunter recognising the face it was the same that was tormenting him. He frowned, a stray thought trying to push its way into his mind, and it was so faint, so soft he could hardly hear it. He closed his eyes trying to catch the sound to study it. A voice filled his mind one that he thought he’d heard a long time ago ‘I love you Nino-chan, and for as long as that star is there I will always love you...’ Nino blinked trying to force that voice away, but he looked up at the sky and saw a single star shining down at him “I am the unholy king” He growled ‘You’re my Nino’ the voice said again, ‘You’ve always been my Nino... My wonderful Nino, it’s time to let go now Nino, you know you’d regret hurting your pretty hunter...’ The demon started “P-Pretty hunter?” he mumbled looking at the hunter in his hands, the voice chuckled ‘your pretty hunter, you love him don’t you?’ it asked floating through his mind ‘He loves you... Just as I love you, you’re our Nino...’
“Who... Who are you?” Nino asked releasing Matsu he stumbled backwards, pressing a hand to his temples, memories flooding back.
‘My Nino, I love you...’
“O-Oh-chan?” the demon whispered his body trembling slightly as a name came into his head
‘Hello, Nino-chan...’
Matsu was watching his mouth opening and closing as he saw the unholy king, talking to himself, for some unknown reason he felt his heart sting as he heard Nino say ‘Oh-chan’ even in this state he could still think about the first.
‘Jun, when you are ready, you have to kill, Nino’ A voice said in Matsu’s own head causing him to jump wildly
“Who are you?”
‘I am the first... It’s time to release Nino’ Ohno said his voice echoing around in his head, Matsu trembled slightly, the sword almost slipping out of his hands, he wondered vaguely if this was how Toma had felt all the time
“I-I... C-can’t...” He said his voice shaking, much to his embarrassment. He felt the 1st king smile; telling him it was going to be okay, “H-He’s Nino...”
‘And Nino wouldn’t want to be like this’ Ohno told him softly; ‘Nino wouldn’t want to be like this’ Matsu looked at Nino, who was staring at him, his brown eyes silently pleading with him, the hunter took a deep breath his grip tightening on the sword, Nino made a soft sound but he didn’t move as Matsu came forwards the sword pointed at his chest
“Jun” Nino whispered, almost relieved when he felt the sword of the first king piercing him in the heart, a bright white light came out circling them for a moment and then spread out over the clearing . Jun cried as Nino’s blood slowly moved over the silver and gold staff, “Don’t cry... My pretty hunter...” Nino breathed as he felt his life slipping away, Matsu let go of the sword, and almost fell at Nino’s side, wanting to wrap his arms around the demon and never let him go. He hadn’t realised the demon’s breathing had stopped that his normally overly warm body temperature was already cooling. He wasn’t aware of anything until he felt a hand touch his shoulder lightly; he blinked looking up with blurred tear filled eyes. The face looking down at him was one he didn’t know but could recognise it as easily as his own face, Ohno Satoshi, the kings were back.
