Crowned prince Ninomiya Kazunari had his reasons for not wanting people to know why he was living in a small house in the country side or why his only companion was a former knight that he loved more than his own father, Ikuta Yori. He didn’t leave the cottage much relaying on Yori to get him everything he needed, so it was surprising that he even met the tanned older boy that day by the stream, they stared at each other in silence, Nino could feel his heart pounding against his ribs, his brain was screaming at him to get away, but he couldn’t move.
“Are you okay?” The boy asked, a small frown creasing his forehead. Nino gave a quick nod and stumbled backwards, not realising that there was a root sticking out of the ground, his foot caught and he fell backwards landing in the small pond. “Are you okay?” The boy repeated holding out a hand, Nino shrugged it away and tried to push himself up but only found pushing against mud “Here just take my hand” The guy said flashing a sleepy smile, Nino took a breath and then held out his hand blushing slightly when he realised it was muddy. The other boy didn’t seem to mind and just grabbed his hand tightly and pulled him to his feet, Nino was surprised when the boy didn’t let go straight away “Your hands are soft like a girls” he grinned and Nino glared pulling his hand away,  “I’m Ohno Satoshi”  Nino continued to glare but Ohno realised there was no real malice to it, the younger guy, who couldn’t be more than 16 or 17 judging from his cute face, was just nervous and judging by the way the clothes were clinging to him very wet and very cold. “Where do you live? You should hurry up home and get warm...” Nino stared at him and then with a internal sigh picked up a stick and wrote
>I’m sorry, thank you for helping me...<
“You can’t talk?” Ohno asked raising an eyebrow, and watched as Nino shook his head “Oh... I thought you just didn’t want to talk to me”
>Nino< He wrote pointing to himself
“You’re Nino? Cute” Ohno said flashing another warm smile “Nice to meet you Nino, but you really should get out of those wet clothes, or you’re going to catch a cold...” Nino looked around trying to tell him he didn’t know where he was or where the cottage was; he did know Yori would be looking for him but he had no idea how long it would take “You’re lost?” Nino nodded again, Ohno ran a hand through his long silky hair, frowning slightly. “My grandma’s cottage is just over there... You could come and get dry... My grandma will be there...” Ohno said when a look of fear crossed over Nino’s face, and Ohno flushed feeling like he was trying to reassure a girl. Nino relaxed slightly, but his eyes were still wary as they went through the trees to a small farm. His ankle hurt slightly from where he had tripped before he had met Ohno though his fall just now hadn’t helped, he was glad when they reached the cottage. There were candles flickering in the windows giving the house a homely glow “Grandma...” Ohno called as he motioned Nino into the hall, Nino was ashamed when he left his muddy foot prints on the clean stone floor “Grandma...”
“I heard you...” An old lady said coming in from what must have been the pantry “Oh and who’s this?”
“This is Nino; he fell in the stream...”
“I can see that” The old woman said looking at Nino’s dirty wet clothes “I’m Ohno Kana, nice to meet you...” Nino gave a quick bow of the head panicking a little
“Nino can’t speak” Ohno told her softly, causing Kana’s eyes to widen,
“I see well take him upstairs and get him into some of your clothes, they might be a little big... But they’ll be dry” she said looking at Nino’s pale face, wondering where she had seen it before. Ohno took Nino’s hand and led him up a stair case, Nino’s heart raced against his ribs as he was led into a bedroom but Ohno just dropped his hand and went to get him some clothes from a small chest and handed them to him. Nino wanted to be able to say ‘Thank-you’ but he just stood there open mouthed. Ohno gave him another smile “There put those on and then come down” he said before going out and shutting the door. Nino pulled his wet cold clothes off and then pulled Ohno’s on the length was almost right but the older guy was obviously broader than he was.  After he got changed he went down stairs and saw a note pad and pen sat on the worn table, “Here... You can write down whereabouts you live and I’ll take you home” Ohno told him softly as he guided Nino to the bench and sat him down while Kana gave him a bowl of soup. Nino felt his mouth water at the smell, Yori was an okay cook but he missed the cook from the castle. With a quick smile he picked up his spoon and took a mouthful, Ohno grinned as Nino’s expression became one of pure happiness “Yummy?” He asked. Nino nodded
>Thank-you< He wrote quickly, Kana smiled as she settled herself into a rocking chair, she was surprised at how talkative her grandson was being, but compared to the silent Nino anyone would be talkative. She frowned again as she looked at his face, she was positive she had seen it somewhere, but it kept escaping her.
“So where do you live? The village?” Ohno asked, Nino shook his head pushing the empty bowl away he pulled the pen and paper to him and started writing
>I just moved to Lotus cottage< He wrote slowly >with my guardian Yori<
“Lotus cottage?” Ohno mused, chewing his lip thoughtfully “The one that’s just outside the village?”
Nino nodded, and Ohno stared at him in surprise, although it was called a cottage compared to the rest of the village it was more of a hall. “So how did you end up out here?”
>It wasn’t on purpose, I went for a walk and got messed up in the forest< Nino wrote frowning again >I tried to find my way out but I hurt my ankle and then I met you<
“You hurt your ankle?” Ohno asked and the remembered the younger guy had been limping a bit, he got down on his knees and gently touched Nino’s swollen ankle “I’m sorry, I didn’t realise” he murmured and then went to get a cloth wet with some cold water. Nino flinched as the cold cloth touched his skin; Ohno gave him an apologetic smile as he gently brought his leg up to rest it on the bench. Nino frowned he was used to people treating him with a respectful kindness because of his position as a prince, but there had never been any genuine kindness before, most people mistook his muteness for being stupid and would often talk about him like he couldn’t understand them only Yori really took the time to read his messages. Ohno was smiling at him again, and Nino found himself smiling along, “Does that feel better?” Nino nodded and pointed to the first note he’d written
>Thank-you<
“You’re welcome... I’ll ride to the cottage and find your guardian, okay?”
>He will be trying to find me< Nino wrote quickly
“You could write him a note and tell him you’re here, okay?” Ohno smiled, Nino nodded and then looked around
>Where am I?< He asked as he wrote a short letter
“Rain Farm” Ohno answered softly, finding the way Nino frowned over the letter cute beyond words, he wasn’t the first guy Ohno had thought was cute and Ohno knew there was something wrong with him. Even his parents knew it that’s why he lived so far away from the village, he was considered their shame. Nino finished the letter and handed it to him, Ohno smiled as he left and Nino was left alone with Kana.
“Have you ever been able to speak?” She asked looking up from her knitting, Nino shook his head
>I was born mute< He wrote and showed it to her, Kana frowned and Nino wondered if she could read, sure enough she confirmed his suspicions a few minutes later
“Sorry, I can’t read” She apologised, Nino held up a hand telling her it was okay, although he was disappointed he wanted to know more about Ohno. They sat in a nerve ringing silence, the only sound coming from the clicking of the knitting needles and a clock, Nino looked up happily when the door opened and Ohno came back in
“There was no one there so I pinned the note to the door”
>Thank-you< Nino held up the paper, Ohno smiled shaking his head telling him it was okay
“How’s your ankle?”
>It feels better< Nino answered then tapped the pen against the paper, he wanted to ask so many questions but he wondered if it would be rude to ask. Ohno sat facing him and gave a small smile
“So what’s your full name?” Nino looked at him, he was going to tell him the truth but he liked the fact he wasn’t forcing himself to be nice so he lied
>Kazuki Nino< he answered >But just call me Nino< Ohno nodded and then smiled again, they spent the next few hours talking, about unimportant things.
“So you moved here with your dad?”
>Yori isn’t my dad, he’s my guardian...< Nino wrote, causing Ohno to wonder why the younger guy looked so sad about that, but he didn’t ask, he sensed there was a lot that Nino didn’t want anybody to know, though he had relaxed there was still clouds of fear in the smaller guys eyes and he flinched if Ohno moved too quickly
“How old are you?”
>17... You?<
“20” Ohno answered Kana looked at them from her knitting, chewing her lip with worry, she wasn’t bothered by the ‘scandal’ her grandson had caused in the village, but from the look on his face she was worried he was running straight into the same mistake and if the strange silent boy did live in Lotus cottage his family had the wealth and influence to make life unbearable for her beloved grandson. She had watched them as they ‘talked’ it was like they were old friends, except there was still a small amount of fear in Nino’s eyes. She let her mind wonder trying to work out where she had seen those eyes before, a vague face filtered into her thoughts but it was still foggy. It had been early evening when Ohno had brought Nino here now the moon was high in the sky and there seemed to be no sign of Nino’s guardian. Nino didn’t mind though, he was glad that someone didn’t treat him like he was stupid or pity him because he couldn’t talk. He had hated his disability for as long as he’d been born but his condition defied all attempts of the best healers in the kingdom to cure him, he just couldn’t speak. His father, the king treated him like he was a burden but as he was the only child there was no other option than for him to be the heir to the throne of Etherin even if that thought chilled Nino to the bone. No-one outside of the castle knew of his inability to speak, as the king thought he made him look weak. The clock had just announced very loudly that it was 12o’clock when there was suddenly a short sharp knock at the door, Ohno went to answer it and was surprised to see a very dignified man with greying hair standing on the doorstep, he guessed this must be Nino’s guardian. Guardian fitted the man perfectly, he looked more like a soldier than a caretaker but the happy expression on Nino’s face was surprising, like a doting son on his father. The knight sighed with relief as he saw the prince sat at the table his leg resting on the bench he was surprised by the smile on the princes normally sour face “Nino, I was so worried about you” Yori mumbled, Nino smiled at his minder apologetically writing on a piece of paper, Yori looked at the table amazed at the amount of paper that had been written on,
>Sorry, Yori, I got lost and then I hurt my ankle<
“I can see that... Thank-you for looking after him” Yori said softly as knelt down to examine Nino’s ankle, sighing with relief when he saw it wasn’t as bad as he’d feared “I brought the carriage”
>Thank-you< Nino smiled but there something like disappointment in the young princes eyes, like he didn’t want to leave Ohno saw it, and was almost happy about that fact. >Ohno, would you come and visit me?< the pen that wrote that was hesitant and the words weren’t as confident as they had been all night. Visiting Lotus cottage would take him closer to the village than he would like but he couldn’t bear to see the shadows of sadness in Nino’s eyes.
“If you want me too” He answered his heart thumping against his will when he saw Nino’s bright smile
>Thank you, Ohno< He wrote quickly still smiling happily. Ohno grinned but he kept trying to tell himself Nino just needed a friend. >Tomorrow?<
“Sure...” He agreed with a nod “In the afternoon I have work in the morning”
Nino smiled again Yori looked at the young man his prince was so relaxed with and then smiled
“Thank you again, we shall see you tomorrow” He said with a bow before bending down and easily scooping Nino into his arms. Although Nino glared he allowed himself to be carried princess style out of the cottage and into a waiting carriage.
“I remember where I’ve seen him!” Kana gasped after they’d left her eyes were wide with fear “He’s the prince”
