‘Don’t you think he has the right to know his father’s been poisoned?’ Yori bit back a sigh, as he woke up, it was true Nino deserved to know but when he did, he knew the prince would insist on going back to the castle. He didn’t want that, not yet, Nino still deserved some happiness before he was forced into back to the castle and forced to grow up. He had managed to convince Yamapi not to say anything but Yori knew the healer was expecting him to tell him soon. Yori let out the grown that he had holding in and went downstairs, deciding that he would tell him that night after he had been to the farm. He went into the sitting room surprised when it was empty, Nino had stopped having the dreams since he had met Ohno but the prince was still up before him most mornings. He went back upstairs a lightly knocked on the wooden door. Nino opened his eyes slowly at the knock pain flooding into his entire body, if he could have made a noise it would have been a groan as he tried to sit up. Yori frowned coming to the bed “prince, are you okay?” He asked softly as he put hand to his forehead, surprised at how hot he was “I think you should rest today” Yori told him gently preparing himself for how he was going to react. Ever since he was young the prince had hated being ill, because as a child he had gotten sick almost every month and to the king it had just proved his theory that he was weak and worthless.
>I’m fine< He wrote but his hand was shaking and his head was aching too much to even focus
“Nino, you’ve been working hard... Your body just needs a little rest...” Yori told him gently
> I think you’re right... I’d better stay in bed< Nino wrote slowly hating himself as hefell back into bed as his head felt like it was full of clouds, Yori put a hand to his forehead again, Toma knocked on the door softly,
“Is everything okay?” He asked leaning against the door frame, Yori sighed shaking his head
“Toma would you go for the healer” He asked “And maybe go to the farm and tell Ohno we won’t be there today...”
>I’m fine, you can go... Satoshi will need help...< Nino wrote almost tempted to get out of bed he couldn’t leave Ohno alone, there was too much work to do.
“My duty is to you, your highness...” Yori said ignoring the pout Nino was giving him
“I’ll stay at the farm” Toma laughed softly “Don’t worry, Nino”
>Thank-you< Nino grinned before wincing and falling back into the pillows, cursing the world and everything in it that he had gotten sick. Even with a visit from Yamapi it would be a few days until he could see Ohno again, the farmer would be too busy to come and see him.
“But first I’ll go get Yamapi” Toma told him, giving a quick nod and leaving the room to get his cloak and gloves. He was hoping that Yamapi would actually be at the temple, he didn’t want to linger and after the late night talk he’d had with his uncle he doubted if the prince would be comfortable in having someone else touch him. After Toma had left Nino grabbed Yori’s hand tightly trying to get his attention, the old knight had been acting strangely since yesterday and he was starting to worry about him. The prince picked up his notebook again although he was tired
>Yori, is something wrong?< he asked with a frown
“No of course not your highness had”Yori said trying to smooth it over, though he gave an internal groan“You should get some rest before Yamashita comes...”
>Don’t lie... You’ve been acting strangely since yesterday< Nino pointed out, Yori gave a short laugh,
“I guess I should know better than to try to lie to you... But please, you should rest... I’ll tell you later I promise...” he said softly, he didn’t want to tell him but Yamapi was right Nino did need to know. He had wanted the prince to enjoy he freedom as much as possible, even if it was dangerous. He had loved the happiness that had been in Nino’s face for the past few months. He hadn’t seen it in a long time and he knew it would be a long time before he would see it again once Nino was taken back to the castle. Nino let out a sigh and the nodded slowly, to achy and tired to argue.
It was about an hour’s ride to the temple and as he stopped his grey mare outside the beautiful Toma felt a wave of disgust wash over him, he hated the temples; they were always full of self important holy men looking down their noses at people. He should be glad that Yamapi wasn’t that bad but there was always the thought that loomed in his head, he wasn’t that bad ‘yet’, it would only take a few years and everything he loved about the young healer would be stripped away, leaving a self satisfied shell. He had loved the lord since they were both young, and he had found the lord sitting alone under the apple tree on his farm. They were only a year apart but sometimes, he felt years older. It had been that way ever since they had met under the apple tree. *He’d been surprised when he’d walked up the hill and saw the cute noble boy sitting underneath the tree, he recognised him from the times he had gone with his father to pay the rent, he had always thought he was cute but had never been able to talk to him until now,
“You want an apple?” Toma asked
“They’re too high up” he pouted looking at the juicy looking apples. Toma followed his gaze, he’d always wanted to eat the apples himself but unless his dad or less often his uncle got them for him he had never been able to reach. He looked at the noble thoughtfully and then flashed his easy grin
“If you climb on my back, you’ll be able to reach them” He said as he knelt down, the boy stared at him in surprise and then nodded, quickly doing what he said he sat on his shoulders and held tightly as Toma stood up slowly. Yamapi grabbed two of the closet ones quickly
“You can let me down” He gasped as he clutched the prize, Toma did so and Yamapi stood staring at the two apples, one was slightly bruised on one side, but the other was perfect. He held out the good one to Toma. The farmer’s son blinked in surprise as he took the good apple, he’d been positive that the noble would have given him the bad one, Yamapi was about to take a bite when Toma stopped him pulling out a pocket knife his uncle had bought him he easily sliced the good apple into halves and then cut on half again handing it to Yamapi before taking Yamapi’s apple and doing the same, taking half the bad part for himself
“There now it’s completely fair” He said and then threw the bad half back under the tree before sitting down and biting into the apple letting out a happy sigh as he looked at the view. He loved this part of the farm from here you could see right out to the ocean even if it was far in the distance, he knew that one day he was going to be able to go there. He’d never told anyone but one day he would be like his uncle Yori and be a knight and travel all over. Yamapi sat beside him happily munching on the apple,
“Wow... That’s amazing, you can see the sea if you squint” The noble said, and Toma was surprised again, very few people were able to see it unless it was pointed out to them, his uncle Yori had, had to point it out to him when they had first moved to the farm. “Have you ever been there?”
“Where? The sea?”
“Yeah, I went this year... I was meant to meet the prince Kazunari but apparently he’s been ill” Yamapi said with a shrug
“You were meant to meet the prince?”
“Yes” Yamapi nodded “I’ve been to the castle a few times, but I’ve only ever met prince Ryuu of Airith” Yamapi said, turning his nose up slightly “Prince Ryuu is horrible... I hope he’s never king of Etherin, even if he does keep saying that one day he will rule... What do you do around here?”
“Work mostly...” Toma answered surprised by the young noble’s talkative attitude.
“Don’t you have lessons?” Yamapi asked raising an eyebrow
“No” The farmer answered, not admitting he hadn’t even been to the village school,
“Wow you’re lucky... I hate lessons, my tutor just keeps going on about when I’m a knight...”
“A knight? You’re going to be a knight?”
“So they keep saying, they say that I’ll have to go to the academy one day and serve the prince in the castle...”
“I’m going to the academy one day” Toma told him with a confidence he didn’t really feel, he knew it was an impossible dream there was no way he could get into the academy. His reality was working on the farm just like his father, but there was always the chance, after all Yori had done it and he had been a farmer too at one point.
“Really? But... You’re a commoner...” Yamapi said there was no malice in his tone he was just saying a fact.
“My uncle is the prince’s personal knight” He said quickly with a tinge of pride.
“Really?” Yamapi’s eyes were wide as he took in that new information, “So he’s going to give you a recommendation?”
“A what?” Toma frowned as he threw the finished apple core down
“It’s a letter, sometimes when a knight that has graduated from the academy thinks that someone that’s not from a noble family is worthy of a place they can write a letter, every knight is only allowed one recommendation because the recommendation is always approved... Not that most knights ever use theirs...”
“So you’re saying my uncle can do that?” Toma asked gripping his arm excitedly hope blooming in his heart, Yamapi nodded with a smile
“As the personal knight of a member of the royal family he must hold a lot of sway in the academy... Except... Can you read and write?”
“Why is that important?”
“Even with a recommendation you have to be able to that...” Yamapi told him hating himself when he saw he face fall
“I guess it really is impossible” Toma sighed
“Not really I could help you learn to read and write” the noble said quickly “I have my lessons in the morning but in the afternoon I’m free so I can help you learn...”
“Why? Why would you help a commoner?”
“Because you helped get me an apple” Yamapi answered with a laugh, and then held out his hand “We have a deal then?”
“Sure, why not?” Toma beamed taking the offered hand they shook on it. After that they had been pretty inseparable, Yamapi taught Toma everything he had been taught, though it was hard at first the farmer slowly became to understand what Yamapi was going on about. It was after they had known each other for a few months that Toma found out Yamapi didn’t want to be a knight and that he wanted to be a healer, he’d been surprised but relieved when he found out, if he thought about it, even back then the relief he felt when Yamapi said that had been more than just a ‘Friend’ feeling, but being only a kid at the time he hadn’t thought about it too much and as the years passed their friendship became steady and although Toma’s parents were against the idea they grew to accept it. Though he knew Yamapi never told his parents where he went every other day, he didn’t let bother him happy when they could be together,
“So have you told your parents yet?” Toma asked as threw a stick into the stream, it had been a hard winter, but now spring was back again, soon the farm would be full of baby animals and there would be no time for his lessons not that he needed them anymore they just . Yamapi gave a laugh at his question
“It’s not that easy, I have a duty to be a knight and serve the kingdom...”
“Uncle Yori would say that if your hearts not in it you will only fail in your duty” Toma said softly,
“So what I should just tell my parents that I don’t want to be a knight?”
“Yes... Being a knight isn’t something you should have to do because you’re from a noble family; I want to be a knight because I want to be able to protect the things I love when they are threatened... I would be willing to die to do that... But if someone doesn’t want to be a knight is fighting they’re would be a weakness...”
“So even if you can’t be a knight you would be in the army?”
“Yes” Toma nodded without hesitation, Yamapi gave a frown and then sat down hugging his knees to his chest
“Don’t say stuff about dying” He mumbled “I don’t want you to die”
“Yamapi?”
“I-I mean because we’re friends and...”
“I was happy when you said you didn’t want to be a knight” Toma admitted sitting on the bank next to him, they were so close they could feel each other’s body heat. “I don’t like the idea of you being in danger...”
“You make it sound like I’m a girl...”
“You’re not a girl, but I still don’t want you in danger, Yamapi... I have bad dreams about it all the time...” Toma admitted truthfully,
“Stop it, you sound like you’re confessing or something” Yamapi said with a nervous laugh, his cheeks flushed slightly. Toma gave a short laugh of his own
“I guess that would be wrong right?” He murmured looking at Yamapi
“Of course it is we’re both men...” Yamapi whispered letting out another shaky laugh, keeping his gazed fixed on the water watching a trail of bubbles moving across its surface,
“I still like you though” Toma admitted “When I said that stuff about wanting to protect the things I love, it was your face that was in my head”
“Toma don’t you go to temple as much as I do, you know this is wrong...” Yamapi told him and started to move away but Toma caught his hand and held it tightly stopping him from moving
“It’s only wrong because stuffy old men say it is...” He said linking their fingers, Yamapi stared down at them, and Toma knew he was thinking how right it felt just like he was.
“No it’s because the gods say it is... Look I like you as a friend let’s just leave it there okay? I’d better go... I don’t know when I’ll be able to make it back down, and you’re going to be busy soon, right?” Yamapi sighed un linking their fingers although it was reluctantly. Toma watched him go a sinking feeling in his heart as he realised he may have just pushed his best friend away, but, he thought throwing a stone at the stream at least he’d tried. Yamapi made it back to the hall his heart was aching; he hadn’t been able to tell Toma that his parents had set up a marriage for him, he wasn’t an idiot he’s known for a long time what he and Toma were wasn’t simply friends but he had never had Toma’s courage to just come out and say it, and now even if they could act on it, it was too late. The lambing was nearly finished by the time he made it back to the farm, he heart gave a funny leap when he saw Toma in the field, the spring sun was in his face giving it a beautiful glow, and he looked almost too beautiful to be real. Toma gave a bright smile as he saw him and after saying something to his father ran up the slight hill to their apple tree. Yamapi watched Toma’s father head back to the house before saying softly
“I’m getting married”
“What? When?”
“In six months, her name’s Bei” The noble told him softly watching Toma’s face carefully, waiting for his reaction and he was disappointed when the answer came,
“Wow... Congratulations” Toma murmured with a smile looking at him calmly, there wasn’t even a tremble in his eyes
“That’s it? ’Congratulations’? You tell me you love me and then you just say congratulations?” Yamapi snapped, irritated when Toma pulled a confused face before getting angry himself
“You told me that you liked me as a friend... I was acting like a friend... A friend would say congratulations when his friend is getting married” He said back folding his arms across his chest “I knew this, us, would be impossible, but at least I decided to say something...” He would have continued but his mouth was covered by Yamapi’s in a wet kiss. It took awhile for Toma to realise that Yamapi was crying and that’s why it was so wet, he pulled their lips apart and gently wiped the tears away “Yamapi?” he breathed
“Sorry... I didn’t mean too I just...” Yamapi said embarrassed that he’d cried, Toma gave his brilliant smile, telling him that it was ‘okay’ “Six months... That’s all we have...”
“It’s better than nothing” Toma replied and then deciding that the top of the hill wasn’t the best place to kiss dragged him down to the stream before kissing him again “Even if it’s only six months I get to love you...” Yamapi sighed as he rested against him glad that despite his confidence Toma’s heart was racing just as quickly as his own was. The next few months flew by; the secret meetings became fewer but more loving the closer Yamapi’s wedding got. Until at last they both knew he would never be able to go through with it and they were making plans to leave the village together,
“They’ll never let me leave... If they knew about us they’d hand me over to the temples...” Yamapi said as they lay in their spot by the stream. Toma ran a hand down his back, wanting to be able to comfort him but knowing words wouldn’t be any help. “You’ll be going to the academy next year anyway”
“I decided not to go...”
“What?” Yamapi sat up staring at him “You can’t be serious...”
“I am I talked about it with my uncle, he would be more than happy to give me a recommendation but he sensed that I’m not as fixated on saving the whole of Etherin anymore... He didn’t ask for details, but I couldn’t deny it... I would still have gone to the academy if you were going but since finally told you parents that you wanted to be a healer and they accepted there’s no point...”
“No point? Other then it’s what you’ve wanted to do ever since I met you?” Yamapi said “giving up your dream for... Whatever this is, is stupid”
“I love you, you’re the only person I want to protect, Tomohisa” Yamapi blinked at the use of his first name, in all the time they had know each other Toma had never once called him that before, he didn’t really like it preferring the nickname he had given him. Toma gave a laugh at his expression “Too weird?” he asked
“A little” Yamapi admitted but gave a smile as Toma kissed him lightly, “So you want us to run away together?”
“I just don’t want you to get married, the thought of you being with someone else...”
“Bei, she’s a nice girl, she’s the type any guy would be happy to marry... Any guy that isn’t abnormal... She deserves a lot better than me”
“I think you’re perfect”
“Yeah, but you’re just as abnormal...” Yamapi sighed but smiled as he wrapped his arms around him their bodies wanting to be joined together again. Lost in their own world neither of them noticed Toma’s father looking at them with a grey face his eyes burning with anger. They made a promise to meet each other the following week and then separated. Toma had known something was wrong but he didn’t know what until he came downstairs two days later and Yori was sat in the sitting room gazing at him sadly
“You’re going to the academy” He father said “Yori has given you a recommendation... You will leave with Yori today...”
“What? No, I said I didn’t want to go anymore...”
“This has nothing to do with you,, you’re either going to the academy or you’re going to the temple...”
“What for?”
“Don’t act innocent!” His father snapped hitting him harshly across his face, “You disgust me... You and that Yamashita, I knew he was trouble... You are going to the academy or your relationship will be revealed...” Toma licked the blood from his lip and glared at his father, over the years beatings had been a regular thing between them and this was just one of many. The idea that people would know about Yamapi though, and that he would be sent to the temples, was enough to send shivers down his spine. He knew his father would do it. His heart broke in to two as he agreed to leave with Yori that afternoon. When he arrived at the academy he wrote to Yamapi but he never expected an answer so he wasn’t surprised when no reply came, he didn’t know his parents had told him was dead...* Toma shook himself as he saw Yamapi standing by a window, the winter sunlight playing on his face, nobody had ever made him as breathless as Yamapi did. He wondered what happened to the letter maybe their live would have been different. At the very least Yamapi wouldn’t have frowned when he saw him coming towards him “What’s wrong? Is Kana...”
“His highness is sick... Uncle Yori asked if you will go and see him” Toma answered pushing his memories away, and flashing his normal smile at the surprised healer. “Yamapi... I never wanted to leave you... If I had known what they told you...”
“Stop, not here...” Yamapi hissed staring around at the eves dropping holy men that were all around them. “We can talk...” He was cut off by a castle messenger running in and stopping in front of the master, the master of the temple read it his eyes widening for a moment before looking at the assembled crowd
“The King is dead... Etherin has a new king...”
A/N: Sorry for not posting yesterday >.< And sorry this became more of a TomaPi part ... I still hope you like it ^.^
