Masaki woke slowly his face sticking to the glossy cover of the book. He wiped his eyes and let out a long yawn stretching before quickly opening the book and finding the right page. His finger moved over the page as he tried to remember the words that Sakurai had taught him
“Th-There was wo-Once ae miller who hey-had there son’s an-dd wh-en he di-ed… His is-tate was de-vad-ed be-twe-en the-m…The ol-de-r sons fea-red very well but the you-Young-est re-ce-ve-d noth-ing…B-u-t the cat…”
“Good morning Masaki-kun” Aiba said coming into his room with a steaming cup on a sliver tray, with three biscuits on a small plate. She gave him a smile and set the tray on the side, “You sounded very good…”
“Thank-you…” He blushed looking down at the book, “I don’t sound as good as Sho-sama…”
“He had to practice every day since even before he was your age…” Aiba sighed softly looking at the photo that was still on the bed, Masaki was surprised by how sad she seemed and slowly he reached out to touch her arm and she gave him a warm smile “Sometimes I thought that maybe he practiced his school work so much that he wouldn’t be able to care about anything else, there was a time when he was a cold person… But… Then out of no-where Masaki came along… Did you know he found that dog? When he was a puppy, he had been left in a cardboard box at the side of the road… He took him in even against his parent’s wishes… That dog followed him everywhere and the young master smiled for the first time…”
“What happened to doggy-Masaki?” Masaki asked looking down at the picture finding it impossible to think of Sakurai as a ‘Cold person’ Masaki touched his silky new hair style, thinking that the Sakurai was the nicest man on the planet. Who else would bother to sit and teach somebody as useless and worthless as him? He fingered the book by his hands guilt that he was wasting so much of Sakurai’s time filled his heart and mind, clouding over his judgment again until he heard Aiba’s voice pulling him back
“He passed away because of old age… And then he met Jun... They were happy for a while but they didn’t last…”
“Jun?” Masaki repeated tilting his head he wasn’t sure if he had heard that name before, he thought that he might have done in his first days here but he wasn’t positive his mind was still fuzzy about the days when he had come here.
“His ex-boyfriend” Aiba answered patting his shoulder “There are still friends but the young master he started getting cold again… but none of that matters now he has another Masaki to look after and treasure ne?” She said brightly her eyes dancing as she looked at him.
“Eh? But… But I have my master! I have to go back to my master…” Masaki panicked when happiness at her words formed in his heart. He knew that he wanted to stay but he couldn’t his master needed him, he didn’t want to make Sakurai sad again but he didn’t want his master to be angry with him or Sakurai. He was scared that his master might know that he didn’t want to come back to him sometimes. If his master knew that he would blame Sakurai and if got mad at Sakurai he would hurt him and punish him and all Sakurai had done was help him.
“Masaki-kun… I’d didn’t mean…” Aiba said touching his shoulder and Masaki started shaking and rocking with fear, not wanting his master to find out about Sakurai.
“It’s okay, Masaki… Aiba-san just meant that I can treasure you while you’re here…” He heard Sakurai say from the doorway and Masaki turned his wide fearful eyes to him.
“I’m sorry… I’m sorry… I can’t stay Sho-sama…” He gasped tears flowing down his face and Sakurai strode into the room, hugging him while stroking his hair and kissing his forehead.
“Masaki… Masaki… It’s okay… I understand that you can’t stay, but while you’re here let me look after you, okay?” He repeated over and over in his ear and slowly Masaki nodded calming down again. He couldn’t understand how the older man was able to do that but his whole body relaxing against him and when he looked back up Sakurai was grinning do at him. “Right… Let’s have some breakfast and then let’s get out of here for a bit…”
“Eh… But… But I was practising this I can still remember!” Masaki said opening the book and showing him the page, now he was calm he wanted to show Sakurai that he wasn’t wasting his time. His mind was so confused, he wanted Sakurai to smile at him and be pleased with him but at the same time he was scared that if he had it he would always want it.
“I know you have, Masaki… But we can do that later… We need to keep looking for your master right?”
“Yes… We have to find my master” Masaki nodded closing the book softly, and wiping her eyes quickly Aiba darted out of the room apologising to both of them.
“Here… Drink your tea and have your biscuits, when you’re finished we’ll brush your hair in the same way Ren did it ne?”
“Sh-o-sama… Do you… really treasure me?” Masaki asked playing with the tips of his hair again as he looked into the older man’s face. Sakurai ruffled his hair and said in an easy sounding voice.
“Yes, I think I do treasure you… Now drink your tea… and have a shower okay Masaki?”
Masaki nodded picking up the cup and sipping the lukewarm tea and nibbling the biscuits as Sakurai slipped out of the room again. He heard Sakurai talking to Aiba softly through the closed door but their voices were muffled and although he strained his ear he couldn’t hear what was being said. After he had finished the tea and eaten the home made biscuits he climbed out of bed, dressing himself carefully in his bathrobe he went to the bathroom and had a quick wash, careful not to use too much water like he had always been told before getting dressed in a hurry and went out into the kitchen.
“No, I don’t understand nor do I have to listen, goodbye” Sakurai snapped in the harshest tone Masaki had ever heard him use and for a wild moment he thought that the older man was talking to him until him throw the… Object he was always talking into across the room. Sakurai gave him a quick apologetic smile motioning for him to sit down at the breakfast table. The ate in silence with Aiba sitting with them nursing some scrambled eggs and orange juice still looking guilty for any problems she may have caused. Masaki wanted to say he was sorry for the way he behaved but he wasn’t sure how. Slowly he took her hand and gave it a light squeeze. When she looked up at him he gave the best smile he could and she gave one of her own apologising for what she said while Nino apologised for how he had reacted. Sakurai clapped his hands smiling happily at both of them before getting to his feet and fetching a comb running it gently in Masaki’s hair while Aiba cleared up the table. They went out to the car and Masaki wondered where they were going that day, Sakurai looked grim at his side and more than one Masaki caught him staring at his face while chewing his lip. They drove through the city and slowly the tall buildings filtered out until there were larger wooden framed houses. Aiba felt his stomach clench and tighten as he looked at the houses, nausea rose up in his chest as something in his brain screamed for attention. The car came to a stop outside the front of a house and Masaki could almost feel his heart stopping as memories of being in a tight hot confined space came flooding back into his mind. In the corner there was a bucket for toilet that was cleaned every morning. There was screaming and shouting the feel of a fist hitting him hard in the stomach while he begged to be let go. Soon there was the image of him being dragged out of the smelly room by a man that was blurred to him
“-aki… Masaki are you okay? Masaki…” A voice called to him and his brain was only dimly aware that it was Sakurai’s voice.
“I’ve been here before” He choked out rocking backwards and forwards pulling at his hair “My master he took me from here… He took me… He took… Me…”
“Masaki…Where did he take you?” Sakurai asked and the teenager could feel him gripping at his hand and he tried to focus the whirlpool of emotions and memories that were going through his head. He closed his eyes as a fuzzy almost black and white image came to him, it was his master there was a sharp sting of pain and then the bright red blood was back. His hands were wet and sticky with it.
“I did something bad…” He whispered his eyes flying open and he looked at Sakurai again before slumping over in a faint barely hearing the older man calling for him.
