Side story to Tightrope

Matsumoto Jun was the second best trapeze artists in the Amazing Arashi circus, he was more than likely the only person in the world that could almost keep up with his co-star and boss Ohno Satoshi. That was why he had every confidence that the triple back flip with full body turn was going to work. But here he was his heart stopping as he missed Ohno’s hand and plummeted down to the floor. He barely had time to think but when he could all his could see was one face, dark brown eyes and smirk filled smile and then. The safety line cracked and creaked as Jun bounced up and down looking and feeling stunned that he had actually slipped from his partners grip. Looking up he saw that Ohno was scurrying down from the high wire as gracefully as a spider and landing next to him with a muffled

“Are you okay?”

“Ye-…” Jun started but was cut off by loud scream,

“What the fuck do you think you were playing at!?” A voice shouted loudly and Jun turned to see Nino flying towards them Niji the toothless tiger hot on his heels. Everybody in the big top turned in mutual amazement it wasn’t strange for the magician and clown to be angry, Jun was the object of his sharp sarcastic tongue more times than anyone but it was unheard of for him to be angry at Ohno which he very clearly was now. “Jun-pon… Are you okay?”

“I’m fine…” Jun said with a smile knowing that his secret lover was really far out of his mind with worry if he was calling him ‘Jun-pon’ in public with such graceful ease, “It was just an accident…”

“An accident? So you weren’t doing the triple backwards flip with full body turn?” Nino spat his eyes still murderous and Jun was tempted to kiss him right here in the big top. Nobody knew they were lovers, and the chances were as much as he wished differently nobody ever would. If they did ‘come out’ it would be unheard of for a couple like them to be accepted even though they had been dating since forever. Jun pushed his hand into his shirt his fingers lightly touching the front of the card that Nino had given him when they were only seven years old. The first declaration of their love, he wore it as a good luck token every time he went near the high wire.

“Kazu…” Ohno started looking completely devastated but Nino gave a huff turning away from him as he held out his hand for Jun.

“Come on baby” He said and a low but audible murmur started out around the big top from those that had come to see what the fuss was all about. Jun thought that maybe he should be horrified that Nino was openly declaring that they were a couple instead though he took the offered hand and allowed his lover to help him up. Ohno was still watching them his mouth opening and closing a few times. As soon as he was on his feet Nino hugged him tightly pressing his face into his chest his arms going around him tight “You’re a fricken idiot princess… Why the hell did you even try that?”

“I thought you don’t watch me when I’m up there” Jun mumbled in response aware that they were attracting a lot of attention but not caring as his heart was so giddy about Nino’s concern

“I don’t but I have fucking ears Jun… How dare you even attempt that without telling me first?” Nino snapped about to pull away but Jun stopped him holding him tightly “If the safety net… If you…”

“K-chan… It was an accident…” Jun whispered soothingly though he worked out that it was stupid the minute he had said it. Nino seemed to swell up in anger becoming a few inches taller.

“So who’s stupid idea was it to have you even try such a stupid reckless move? I told you and I told you never to even attempt that move!” He screamed his voice echoing around the big top as he turned to face Ohno “It was you, wasn’t it? You fucking lunatic!”

“K-chan… Kazunari…” Jun said putting an arm around his not so secret lover’s back, as Ohno’s face got whiter and whiter with each word. The atmosphere was crackling now as even the simplest of the circus could work out that Nino’s reaction wasn’t just normal concern.

“What’s going on here?” The ring master Sakurai asked running towards them “I heard there was an accident…”

“An accident? he pushed my princess too hard…” Nino spat his finger pointing directly at Ohno almost trembling with anger

“I misjudged the distance and I slipped…” Jun said at the same time and Nino glared at him his eyes blazing angrily. Sakurai looked from one face to the other only listening with half an ear to the mumbles that were filling the big top before making a choice.

“Follow me both of you” He said turning on his heel and marching out of the big top, still glaring at each other both Jun and Nino followed their ring master out of the big top and to his trailer. They stood in front of the dining table that Sakurai used as a desk and Jun took Nino’s hand their fingers locking. His earlier anger was forgotten as they stared into the face of their ring master waiting for whatever fate would be cast down on them. Sakurai watched the action his face going an ashen white

“So you’re… Really…You two?! Nino and Ohno I don’t think I would have even have battered an eyelid… But you two?” The ring master sputtered looking away from their hands to stare at both of their faces in turn. Jun thought that he was wondering if somehow he was just a part in a prank they were both pulling on him. Jun just continued to hold Nino’s hand tightly as they tried to gain confidence from each other. This was the real reason their love could not be talked about, there was the very real danger that they could be cast out of the circus and their community “You… Hate each other… I mean its always looked that way…”

“That is what you could call self-preservation, ring master…” Nino said with a shrug, that Jun knew that the shrug was just a reflex, he knew his over so well, he knew that Nino cared about this circus as much as any of them he was just better at hiding it. Jun nodded in agreement, well half of it was the truth they did scream and shout to pretend but the other half was because Nino really didn’t know when to stop flirting and Jun had no right to ‘mark’ him as his own. For some reason Nino always seemed to delight in making him go crazy with jealousy

“If you want to kick us out you’re free to do so…” Jun mumbled wishing that he could judge Sakurai’s reaction. The old ring master would have kicked them out without thinking but Sakurai was nothing like his father and he knew that Jun was the only person that would even attempt to do some of tricks Ohno tried.

“Hang on I never said anything about kicking you out…” Sakurai said quickly and Jun stared at him rising an eyebrow trying not to smile to much or too widely at least while Nino looked completely and utterly amazed, his mouth falling open as his fingers tightened on his. Jun ran his thumb over the small smooth hand trying to reassure him without words that everything was going to be okay. “But you do know that if you stay things aren’t going to be easy… You will have to prove yourselves constantly… And there will be harassment…”

“There’s still nowhere we’d rather be…” Nino mumbled and Jun had to agree no matter what The Amazing Arashi Circus was their home, for better or worse…
