“See I knew you knew, you are the unholy king after all”
“I knew...” Nino said “How long has he been back?”
“He never left... Not like you...” The taller male snapped “He should be our king...”
“Jun” Nino said and Matsu nodded doing the rite of the three the demon screamed as he burnt, while the woman and other male looked even more fearful. The woman turned to Nino
“Please, your majesty... Release me...”
“Why are you begging to the betrayer?” The male snapped “Akanishi will rule, even the un-ruled hunter won’t be able to stop him...The mortals will be ripped apart as we take their world for our own...” Matsu muttered the rite without even needing Nino to say anything leaving only the female demon left
“Please...” She whispered fluttering her long eye lashes at him, Nino grinned, playing along as he came back close to her again. “We could be good for each other... I could give you what you want...”
The other three watched, Matsu folding his arms across his chest half tempted to burn the woman but Nino seemed to want her alive. Nino motioned for Matsu to untie her
“First don’t try to use a lure on me again, second I have no interest in sleeping with anyone but him... And third I already have a son” Nino said as Matsu released the binds. The female nodded, scrambling to her feet, not looking at the black burnt patches that were her companions. “And lastly wait with Niji” Niji stepped forwards; there was an unpleasant look in the horse’s eye as he looked at the woman, and she stared at him in amazement
“You’re a beast demon...” Niji gave a snort and then whined, biting at the front of her dress.
“He wants you to lie down” Aiba said, helpfully translating, the demon glared, her fingers about to click when Nino grabbed her by the throat,
“Try that on my son again and I’ll make sure death isn’t pleasant” Nino spat his eyes flashing.
“Your son? Forgive me! I didn’t know! I thought he was human!” The demon cried “I wasn’t going to hurt him just knock him over...”
“Wow... She thought I was human” Aiba grinned happily, and then hugged Sakurai, “So even demons can’t tell” Sakurai rolled his eyes and then smiled kissing his forehead lightly
“Your Highness” The demon said looking at Aiba, Nino’s hand still at her throat “Forgive me”
“I forgive you... Though I’m not a highness” Aiba said still happy that she had taken him for a human, she sagged with relief as Nino released her, and then lay on the floor, groaning as Niji sat on her.
“You thought I was going to be seduced by a lure?”
“No...” Matsu shifted uncomfortably even though it was the truth
“Pretty hunter, I told you I’m in love with you...That isn’t going to change because a woman bats her eye lashes at me...” Nino grinned Matsu rolled his eyes. Matsu stared into his eyes and then nodded, wondering why he was being so possessive
“Akanishi Jin? As in Akanishi Jin the first ever hunter” He asked changing the subject, his cheeks flushing with shame at the way Aiba and Sakurai were looking at him.
“The pretender...” Nino answered his face dropping again,
“I’ve heard of Akanishi... He’s in the legends of the kings” Sakurai murmured
“He would be” Nino mumbled darkly, his eyes blazing fire
“He’s another lover I take it?” Matsu sighed
“Not of mine” Nino answered quickly “Akanishi, was the seconds lover”
“He was Kamenashi’s lover?”
“Yes, right up until the moment he betrayed the three kings and they were ripped apart... He’s the reason Ohno is gone” Nino nodded his eyes hard and unforgiving “I always thought he’d died... I guess it was just wishful thinking... ”
“Nino...”
“What?”
“Are you really going to trust the woman?” Matsu asked looking at the female demon that was still being held by Niji, Nino motioned for the horse to let her up, although he found the horses position rather amusing. Niji gave another snort and stood up allowing the female to her feet.
“Yes... For now, she’s right we need allies... More so if we’re going to have fight with him as well... But as long as she understands...”
“I understand” She said quickly, “I serve you... Hunter your dagger...” Matsu handed it to her, watching as she slit her wrist, “My blood is yours...Better cast down than death”
“I accept” Nino said allowing it to drop on his palm “Are there any others?”
“Who would be willing to serve the unholy king? And by doing so be casting themselves down?”
“Yes”
“There are those that feel the duty bound to serve you regardless that you are a betrayer... They feel the pretender is above his station... That because he is not a real demon...” She said “They would gladly serve”
“Then I want you to find them and bring them to me... If you harm a mortal I shall know and you will be killed”
“Yes, your majesty...” She said with a bow
“First though, I ask you to bind yourself to my hunter and master”
“Your majesty?” She questioned looking at Matsu her eyes wide, but the hunter was too busy glaring at Nino, Nino grinned
“Your loyalty to me is fine but I serve my master...”
“I... I will do as you ask...” She nodded taking the dagger again and slicing open the already healing wound “I, Rebecca White bind myself to the hunter... Until your death or my own I will serve you” She dipped her fingers into her blood and then placed it on Matsu’s neck. Matsu felt the same burning as when Nino had done it, but it wasn’t as strong, and it wasn’t long before the burning stopped. Rebecca stared at him for a moment and then turned back to Nino “I have done as you asked...”
“Now go and find the others...” Nino nodded, Rebecca looked around again and then ran from the village as if her life depended on it, which, it did “Jun, are you okay?”
“Yeah, it wasn’t as bad as you... Though I can’t call it pleasant”
“Sorry” Nino sighed kissing the mark lightly “You’re going to have to get used to it though...”
“You’re not seriously going to get more demons to bind to me?” Matsu’s eyes widened
“As many as we can, she’s right, as the unholy king they will serve my blindly... They need to serve you or at the very least they won’t be able to kill you...” Nino sighed closing his eyes, and Matsu was surprised at how... old...The demon looked.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine” Nino smiled though Matsu was positive he was lying, Nino was clutching at the pendent tightly and he thought back to what Matthew had said, ‘everyday it becomes harder to resist, the pendent burns more’, he hadn’t thought about it but looking at the skin it was more bruised. He wondered if by admitting he was the unholy king, made it even harder to resist. If that was the case, what would happen when more demons were calling him ‘Your majesty’? His heart made fluttering thumps against his ribs. Maybe this was why he would need to be stopped. Matsu sighed wondering how much the demon was willing to keep hurting himself to help.
“What I don’t understand is why any demons would help at all even if you’re the unholy king...”
“You’ve never been blood bound to serve someone, the compulsion to do anything your master say’s is over whelming... They can’t fight their nature” Nino mumbled “Serving me is also in their nature... I didn’t want to use it against them... It means admitting I am the unholy king but we need as much help as we can get...There is one more person that would come in very handy... But he might still be angry with me...” Nino said softly “But since he hates Akanishi just as much as I do he might help...”
“Who is it?”
“Nakamaru Yuichi”
“The trickster? You want to bring the trickster into this?” Sakurai said his eyes wide
“You know Yuu-chan?” Aiba said happily “I met him once...”
“Well I don’t know him; I’ve read about him...”
“If anyone has a reason to hate Akanishi it’s Yuichi...”
“Why?”
“Because he loved Kamenashi... But Akanishi won” Nino said with a sigh “I bet none of this was ever in the books about the kings” He laughed when Sakurai and Matsu shook their heads,
“I got the best versions then?” Aiba asked
“You got the truth,” Nino mumbled
“So why does he hate you?”
“We had a mild disagreement 70 years ago...”
“You nearly ripped each other apart” Aiba laughed, while Nino nodded biting his lip
“But... We could try” Nino sighed “Things just keep getting more complicated... You should rest while I prepare the summoning”
Aiba pulled Sakurai away, the monks eyes were wide “He really wants to summon him?”
“Yuu-chan’s not that bad, he’s a pacifist... Besides of all the things you’ve met Nino is the worst or so the monks would have you believe and now you like him, ne?”
“He’s not as ‘un-holy’ as I always read...” Sakurai admitted looking back at Nino who was smoothing the ground while Matsu was watching him. “The demons he wants to bind to Jun... They have to be loyal right?”
“Yes, they won’t be able to fight against the bind... But by binding them to Jun... I get the feeling Nino won’t be around for the end of the war...” Aiba frowned sadly “But if Yuu does help, it’s a good thing... But he really does dislike fighting”
“So why did Nino and him nearly rip each other apart?”
“Sometimes Nino has that affect on people” Aiba shrugged “It would have stopped before it got really serious... At least I think so” Sakurai didn’t know how to react to that so he just sat on a rock beside Aiba watching Nino draw a summoning rune on the floor with his blood. Matsu was just chewing his lip unable to keep his heart from aching at the thought of how much pain Nino must already been in. Nino preformed the summoning and then waited as a figure came into view, misty at first and then more pronounced. The guy was actually pretty cute, though if Matsu was being honest his nose was slightly too large for his face, but it only added to his ‘Cute feel’. He was looking at them with an odd mixture of surprise and curiosity combined with a flash of anger as he saw Nino
“What do you want?” He asked
“Since I summoned you, you could be more polite”
“I could but I don’t feel like it... What do you want Nino?”
“I need your help” Nino admitted though he looked a little forced, Nakamaru raised an eyebrow
“Well this is a surprise...”
“I don’t have time for this, Akanishi is still alive”
“What?” The short sharp question was quite loud startling some of the birds that had settled in the tears for the night.
“Not only is he alive but he’s raised an army”
“A problem but it’s not mine...” Nakamaru said, though his eyes had narrowed and seemed more interested in what Nino was going to say.
“I’ve found the un-ruled hunter; I want to bring back the kings...And that includes Kamenashi...”
“You think I’m still hung up on that?” Nakamaru asked though, there was a faint flicker of hope on his face, Nino’s eyes flashed with a small amount of glee.
“Maybe, maybe not... But you’ve still got to hate him right?” He said “He betrayed them all, he betrayed Kame-chan...Even if you no longer love him, it still hurts...”
The trickster gave a small nod before he could stop himself “I know what you’re trying to do... But you know I hate fighting...”
“Even if it means we can bring him back?”
Nakamaru sighed pinching his nose “I’ll think about it” He said after awhile
“Don’t take too long... Things are looking bad...”
“Okay” Nakamaru nodded as he started to fade, the blood left burn marks on the ground
“Well that went well” Nino groaned “But I hope he will agree, he’s really quite powerful when he gives himself a chance...”
“So what do we do now?”
“We carry on to the halls, there’s nothing else we can do”
“Why did you fight 70 years ago?”
“I can’t remember” Nino mumbled climbing up onto Niji’s back. Matsu stared at his face wondering if it was even worth praying that Nino hadn’t slept with him at some point. Although it was already dusk, Nino moved them on itching to be at the halls as soon as possible, the only problem was that though Nino and Niji had excellent night vision the other horses and riders weren’t so fortunate so they were forced to stop and rest for the night. Matsu realised Nino was tenser than before, there were none of his easy going smiles on his face. He just stared up at the sky watching the stars, until the first rays of the sun came up, Nino woke the rest and they were soon riding again. They took no breaks that day, and soon Matsu was recognising the places they were riding through. The villages became bigger and more and more people were watching them through half closed blinds. They stopped to rest for the second night in an orchard and every time Matsu opened his eyes he saw Nino either watching him or watching Aiba, clinging to the pendent, sometimes the hunter could swear he could see tears in the demons eyes. By midday the next day they were standing on a hill looking down at the halls. It looked so calm, so peaceful, just like Matsu remembered, it was hard to believe that soon they would be attacked. Nino sighed happy and then frowned as he felt a strange sensation pulling at his soul, the view of the halls faded.
