Matsu stared into those eyes for ages his hand still holding the others tightly. Ninomiya continued to smile shyly, the flush on his cheeks deepening. ‘Wow, he really is cute’ Matsu thought studying him.
He was small for a high school student and the uniform he was wearing was slightly too big which just added to his fragile, cute appearance and Matsu seemed to understand the guys from earlier and the way they seemed to want to protect him.
The other guys from Turin seemed to be getting restless and Taguchi stepped forwards.
“Well since everybody knows their roles we can get started, here are your scripts” She said “Ninomiya-kun and Matsumoto-san”
Matsu finely let go of Ninomiya’s hand to take his script,
“Thank-you” Ninomiya whispered to the teacher before walking quickly back to his club, who surrounded him quickly like an armed guard watching Matsu carefully.
Matsu blinked coming back to his senses, wanting to refuse to admit what had just happened. When he looked back up at Ninomiya he saw that he had been joined by a slightly muscular student who was talking to him softly.
“So what do you think?” Aiba asked in ear,
“He looks cute but can he even act?” Matsu shrugged in a whisper, looking at Ninomiya he looked too shy to play a main character, much less Juliet. He had said it quietly, but somehow one of the Turin students had overheard him and soon they were all buzzing with anger their glares deepening.
“I guess the Hitachi students need to see our little Nino in action, ne?” Taguchi said trying to calm them down “Nino-kun, how about we go with the most iconic scene? Where Juliet’s on the balcony…”
“Yes, sensei” Nino said quickly opening his script. Matsu watched as he found the correct page and scanned it quickly before handing it to the muscular guy and coming forwards again.
“Ay me!” Nino sighed heavily, “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I'll no longer be a Capulet.”
His voice clearer than it had been before, but it was softer, and slightly higher pitched. Matsu was positive if he closed his eyes it would be able to imagine a female reciting the lines, but he didn’t want to close his eyes in case he missed the expressions on Nino’s face.
“'Tis but thy name that is my enemy; Thou art thyself, though not a Montague. What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot, Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part Belonging to a man. O, be some other name! What's in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet;” He said softly in a voice that echoed completely the emotions that Matsu was positive Shakespeare had intended.
Matsu was almost completely blown away. This speech had never made more sense had had been as beautiful as it was right now, one quick look at his club mates told him that he wasn’t the only one that was being affected.
“So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd, Retain that dear perfection which he owes Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, And for that name which is no part of thee…Take all myself” As soon as Nino had finished the speech and moved backwards towards the muscular guy the blush came back to his cheeks as if by magic.
The Turin club and most of the Hitachi clapped loudly which just added to the colour that was on Nino’s face and hid his face slightly in the taller guys shoulder.
“I guess that settles it ne?” Yamoto said nudging Matsu’s arm. Matsu nodded quickly. There was no question in his mind now that Nino could handle the role. “Well if there’s no other…”
“Wait how do we know he’s good enough to co-star with Nino?” One of the Turin students asked. They were still glaring at him, he noticed and Matsu wasn’t surprised he had just questioned their star.
“I guess there’s only one way… Same scene” Yamoto said with a sigh. Matsu nodded licking his lips nervously. He hated doing things like this out of the blue. He preferred to read and reread the script until it sank in, but he really didn’t want to be bad in front of Nino… Of Turin not just Nino, he corrected himself as he searched through the script.
His hands shaking, he read his lines and handed it to Aiba who gave him a bright grin and thumbs up sign. Licking his lips again he stepped forwards,
“But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou her maid art far more fair than she: Be not her maid, since she is envious; Her vestal livery is but sick and green And none but fools do wear it; cast it off. It is my lady, O, it is my love! O, that she knew she were!”
Matsu was unable to keep his eyes off of Nino, more so when said the lines ‘It is my love’. Ignoring the glares of the other Turin students, he focused on Nino and soon it felt as if they were the only two people in the room.
“She speaks yet she says nothing: what of that? Her eye discourses; I will answer it. I am too bold, 'tis not to me she speaks: Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven, Having some business, do entreat her eyes To twinkle in their spheres till they return. What if her eyes were there, they in her head? The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars, As daylight doth a lamp; her eyes in heaven Would through the airy region stream so bright That birds would sing and think it were not night. See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand! O, that I were a glove upon that hand, That I might touch that cheek!”
Matsu finished his lines and realised that he had stepped closer towards Nino and quickly went back to his own club his own cheeks as hot a red as Nino’s were. Aiba was giggling happily to himself
“I guess it is true” He said
“Shut up!” Matsu snapped not daring to look back at Nino until his cheeks had calmed down.
“I would say that they are both perfect roles” Taguchi said with a strangely strangled voice.
“Right… I since this is just our first meeting I suggest that you split into pairs, and…”
“I’ll be with Nino” The Turin students chorused loudly, and Taguchi held up her hand
“I think it would be better if you split into pairs of one Turin and one Hitachi… I think the main actors should be together…”
“What but that’s not fair!” They protested in almost whiny voices
“It’s just for an hour for two days a week… He’ll still be in the same room” Taguchi sighed rolling her eyes and Matsu suspected that that kind of thing happened all the time. “Sakurai-kun and you…”
“Aiba Masaki” Aiba said with a sing song voice as he came forwards, the muscular guy detached himself from Nino’s side and came forwards taking Aiba’s hand
“Sakurai Sho, I’m playing the nurse” He said stiffly
“Aiba Masaki, I’m playing the narrator” Aiba said brightly ignoring the cool attitude of the other guy. Matsu smiled, Sakurai was really fooling himself if he thought he could keep that stiffness up around Aiba.
The rest of the clubs were paired up and Matsu walked slowly to Nino, who was nervously playing with a loose thread on his school jacket.
“I didn’t introduce myself properly before I’m Matsumoto Jun” He said, Nino gave a small smile “Nice to meet you Ninomiya-kun”
“Nino… Everybody calls me…Nino” Nino said shyly looking down at his feet. “I… Um… I thought you… Were really good…”
“Thanks, but you obviously won this round” Matsu said with a small a happy bubble forming in his chest at the words though “Um shall we start?”
“Which part?” Nino asked picking his script back up obviously glad of something to do
“I guess we should start with their first meeting” Matsu mumbled opening his script to the correct page. A few minutes later they started
“If I profane with my un-worthiest hand This holy shrine, the gentle fine is this: My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.”
“Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much, Which mannerly devotion shows in this; For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch, And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss.”
Matsu was once again captivated by Nino as his personality changed completely as he took on the role of Juliet again. He fumbled on the pages of his script
“Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too?” He managed slowly and Nino let out a soft laugh his eyes dancing
“Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer.”
“O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do; They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.” Matsu said licking his lips nervously, this was just a read through but he had just remembered that this was where they would kiss.
“Saints do not move, though grant for prayers' sake.”
“I-I… Um…Then move not, while my prayer's effect I take. Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purged.” He said shakily
“I guess… In the play… We have to kiss there” Nino said his blush returning “I mean it doesn’t have to be a r-real kiss”
“Um… Yeah” Matsu nodded slowly wondering if he should feel disappointed that Nino didn’t want to kiss him or relieved. “Do… You like this play?”
“Yes” Nino nodded playing with the edge of his script with his finger “Do you?”
“Not really, it’s about two people who met and fall in love with each in one day… How many times does that happen in real life?”
“You don’t believe in love at first sight?” Nino asked,
“No-… I mean…I…” Matsu froze wondering why he couldn’t answer there was no way he had fallen in love with Nino sure he was cute but there was no way…
