Aiba wasn’t sure how long they were in the darkened dusty shed kissing and holding each other, he thought that it couldn’t have only been a few minutes, but slowly the teacher pulled away. He saw that Sakurai was grinning at him and Aiba tried to push away the dreamy feeling that had filled his mind. His heart was racing against his ribs and he continued to clutch to the teacher for support.
“Masaki-chan, you should head back now, before lights out…” Sakurai murmured gently and Aiba nodded but didn’t move, afraid that is he did everything would shatter and he would wake up staring at the white mattress of Nino’s bed. “Ma-chan… You have to leave first… If we’re seen here together they’ll be too many questions…” Sakurai tried again, running his fingers through his student’s hair and Aiba heard faint traces of laughter in his voice “We can meet here again tomorrow night, okay?”
This time Aiba did move, his fingers slowly releasing the shirt as he took a step backwards, his arms knocking over a few plant pots and then a fork, which clattered to the ground around them in a dramatic fashion, filling the wooden shed with a lot of noise
“Eh! Oh no… Tanaka-san will be mad!” He cried, dreading the wrath of the gardener, he was normally a complete lovable grandpa figure to the residents of the orphanage but not if someone messed around his shed. Aiba bent at the waist trying to pick them up, if he had looked round he would have seen the teacher almost grinning at the nice view he was being given but Aiba wasn’t aware of anything until Sakurai grabbed his hands to stop him from picking up the pots
“It’s okay, Ma-chan I’ll do that, but you better get back to the house before matron does her rounds” he said softly against his ear, his chest pressing against his back. A blush filled his cheeks as his heart seemed to stop and slowly he nodded, wishing that he wasn’t acting like a stupid kid, he thought that if he wasn’t careful Sakurai was going to realise that he had made a mistake and call everything off. The teacher nuzzled his neck and then pecked him before moving away “Go on, I’ll see tomorrow…”
“Okay… Sen-…”
“Sho…” Sakurai put in quickly causing Aiba to look at him in surprise and confusion “This will get creepy if you call me sensei when we’re like this Ma-chan. When we’re like this I just want to be Sho to you”
The orphan felt his heart flutter again, he wanted to stay but Sakurai stroked his cheek lightly and pushed him to the door and reluctantly Aiba left. He only just barely resisted the urge to skip and dance over the grass field as he headed back to the house, slipping back in through the French glass window’s he was surprised to see that the common room only had about five or six residents still in and they were the 17 and 18 year olds. Looking at the clock he saw that it was 8 o’clock. As he was sixteen his ‘room time’ was 9:00 and lights out was 9:30, Nino being a year younger his room time was half an hour earlier. Nino always said that it didn’t bother him and he was happy enough left alone with his games console, Aiba though always went to the room with him and he knew he was glad of it.
Aiba felt like he was almost floating on a cloud as he headed to his bedroom, his heart was dancing against his ribs as he tried to process what had just happened. Sakurai… His beautiful, amazing teacher had agreed date him, they were dating! He wanted to pinch himself to see if he was dreaming, he couldn’t believe it if he didn’t feel the tingle on his lips he would have been positive that his imagination had run away with him. He paused at the door after hearing a muffled conversation between Nino and Jun. Leaning against the wood he wondered if Nino had told him who he was. He took a steadying breathing clearing his expression before pushing open the door and stepping inside. Nino and Jun were sitting side by side on Jun’s bed. Jun wasn’t crying at the moment but it seemed like the tears weren’t far away but he nodded along as Nino told him about Cherry Blossom.
“The boys can use the bathrooms in the evenings on Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and Saturday’s, the other days we have mornings Sunday’s nobody uses them… Or the members of staff do…”
“Does any of the staff live in?” Jun asked and Nino nodded counting them off with his fingers
“The matron does, the school nurse and the gardener…”
“What about Sakurai-sensei?” The new boy asked and Aiba’s heart skipped a few beats at the mention of the teacher and quickly turned to get his PJ’s out from under his pillow, knowing that his face would be looking funny.
“No, the teacher’s go home at the end of the day along with the house/kitchen staff…But they take it in turns to sleep over during the week” Nino answered “I know you don’t want to hear this Jun, but you will get used to this place and if you have any trouble come to me and Ai-baka, we’ll look after you, ne?”
“Yes! You’re fine with us!” Aiba said in a muffled voice, realising, to his shame that while trying to forget Sakurai somehow he had managed to push his head up the sleeve of his pyjama top. He heard Nino give a sigh, getting to his feet to come and help him.
“You missed dinner” His friend stated as soon as he was free and Aiba nodded, half glad that he had already thought of an excuse and half upset that he was going to be lying to Nino.
“I wasn’t hungry so I went for a walk… By the time I came back the kitchen was closed!” He said in a completely believable tone, Nino rolled his eyes going to his side of the chest of drawers he pulled out some crisps, chocolate bars that he always kept in there for emergencies like this. Nino didn’t eat much, and he didn’t enjoy chocolate much but instead of just not taking any from the lunchroom every Sunday he squirreled them away and Aiba was always glad he did “Thanks Nino-chan! You’re a life saver!” he cried taking the food and sitting on his bed. Nino ignored the praise but Aiba was positive that the tis of his friend’s ears were red. Nino offered Jun a chocolate bar and their roommate took it slowly his blank eyes staring at the wrapper.
“Thank-you”
“If you ever want any, you know where it is” Nino said with a shrug closing the drawer and getting out his own PJ’s and pulling them on. Aiba closed his eyes as his friend removed his top, Nino hated people seeing his skin and the network of scars that ran over him like a delicate spider’s web, and Aiba had to admit that he hated seeing them just as much. When he guessed that his friend was ready Aiba opened his eyes and saw Jun staring grimly at Nino’s now clothed back. Nino pretended that nothing was wrong and pulled out his Nintendo and started playing it.
The machine was his friends pride and joy given to him by the staff and a female benefactor that Aiba only knew by sight for his birthday, he only had one game but he played it repeatedly his eyes never leaving the screen even when he climbed into his own bed. There was still time before their official lights out, but after eating the crisps and chocolate Aiba waited for Jun to change before switching off the light wanting to think about Sakurai and their meeting in the shed. He lay staring at the wall, his fingers moving lightly over his lips, positive that he could still feel Sakurai on them. He couldn’t understand why the teacher would pick him but he was glad. He dropped off to sleep surprisingly quickly but woke a few hours later by the bed moving and a soft sobbing. Nino climbed down and got into bed with Jun whispering
“I’m here, Jun, you can cry all you want… I’m here…”
Aiba sighed hugging his pillow and watching his roommates on the bed in the moonlight and felt guilty for being so happy when Jun was crying but not able to stop the smile when he pictured Sakurai’s face.
