Masaki was happy, or at least he thought he was happy, he didn’t have much to compare it to but as he watched Sakurai as he ate all of the cookies he had made he thought that he was close to being the way happiness was described in the books that his master had read to him. With his master he had been content when his master was happy, but only because that meant that his master wouldn’t beat him or strangle him until he passed out. He was scared of being happy the last time that he felt even vaguely happy his master had gone out and he had let him out of the dark room had allowed him to roam the house. Before that day he had never been let out of the dark room when he was alone and in the living room there had been a book.

The book had lots of pretty pictures and he studied each picture carefully they were beautiful. He had spent all that day pouring over that book and he had smiled for what felt like the first time in his life. His master had come home in a bad mood and seen him smiling, the book had been ripped out of his hands and thrown across the room. He was dragged up to the bathroom. Inside was a tub that had already been filled with ice cubes and water. Masaki had been stripped and pushed inside, his head held under the water by his shoulders. He had smacked against the sides of the

“What do you have to be happy about? You’re a nothing! A nobody… Who said you’re allowed to be happy!”

“No… I…” Masaki whispered moving away from the counter so fast he tripped against the stool smacking his head against the fridge

“Ma-saki… Masaki… Are you okay?” Sakurai asked dropping the last cookie onto the plate and grabbing him before he fell to the floor. Masaki looked up at him tears filling his eyes again.

“Please… I’m sorry… I won’t do it again” he sobbed trembling against Sakurai’s body.

“You won’t do what again?” Sakurai murmured in his ear holding him close.

“I won’t look at the pictures… I won’t… I won’t be happy…” He wailed aware that Mrs Aiba was watching him careful her hands in her apron. He heard Sakurai gave a shuddering sigh

“Masaki, you can be happy if you want to… You’re allowed to do what you want…” he told him and Masaki shook his head furiously

“No… No… Master said… He said I wasn’t allowed… He said I’m a nothing… I’m not allowed…” He stammered and spluttered looking up into Sakurai’s face. Sakurai smiled stroking a few strands of hair away from his eyes in such a gentle way that Masaki was still unfamiliar with. He trembled again but this time it wasn’t due to fear he was genuinely happy that Sakurai was so nice to him.

“Masaki, you’re not with your master right now, you’re with me and until we get you back to him you are allowed to be anything you want to be” Sakurai mumbled in a calm steady voice.

“But… But…” Masaki stammered shaking, wondering if that was really okay. He wanted to believe in everything that Sakurai said, he didn’t know that well but there was something that was telling him to trust him.

“When we find your master I promise that I won’t tell him…” The older man murmured softly “And neither will Aiba-san,”

“I… Of course… Of course I won’t” the housekeeper nodded and Masaki was positive that she was almost crying.

“See… See you’re allowed to be anything you want” Sakurai told him gently and Masaki allowed his body to relax. Sakurai helped him back to his feet “Aiba-san a honey and lemon tea please” He asked the housekeeper before leading him into to the living area. He was sat on a plush plump chair and the bump on his head was treated with a little ice pack. Sakurai smiled sitting across from him in the other chair and the room was filled with a heavy silence. Aiba brought in the tea giving them both a cup before going back out to sort out the kitchen.

“Masaki… What would you like to do?” Sakurai asked eventually cutting over the sound of the clock. Masaki wasn’t sure what he meant and looked at the cup, running his finger over the flower patterns. “Masaki?”

“I’m sorry… I didn’t understand the question” He said politely his eyes flicking to him for a second before nervous got the better of him again and he turned back to his drink.

“I’m taking some time off of work and I want to know kind of things you would like to do…” Sakurai murmured and Masaki almost dropped the cup

“M-Me? But…I…”

“Is there anywhere you really want to go?” Sakurai asked again, over riding the protest that Masaki was trying to get out. Masaki still wasn’t sure what he meant but he was scared by the question. He had never once had to think about a thought or an idea in his life, his master always decided everything for him. He wasn’t even sure of what places were out there.

“I… Um… I don’t… You should pick”

“I’m a very boring person, Masaki if you leave it to me we would end up in a library or a museum… Places that I don’t think would interest you…

“I would go anywhere with you… Though… I don’t think I would understand… You could teach me, what a library is…And a museum I would do my best…” Masaki promised and flinched when he heard Sakurai take a deep breath. “I’m sorry… I’m sorry, I know I’m stupid I know…”

“Masaki, it’s not your fault you don’t know what they are…” Sakurai murmured gently. “They’re not that important… A library is just a place with a lot of books…”

“Books? Do they have pretty pictures in them?” Masaki asked remembering that book that he had watched getting burnt, even if it made his master angry he wanted to see those pictures again and Sakurai nodded slowly

“Yeah some of them have pictures… 100’s of them have pictures in… Do you like to read?”

“I can’t read” Masaki said shaking his head slowly “My master he reads to me… He doesn’t like me looking at the pictures though”

“Masaki… If you want to see the books, we can go to the library tomorrow…”

“What about finding my master? I can’t go to the library… I should be trying to get back… I should be…” Masaki said in another panic as the thought of seeing 100’s of picture books excited him.

“It’s okay. Ninomiya and my friend are still looking for your master, and looking around maybe you will see something that will remind you of where you’re meant to be…” Sakurai told him and Masaki took a deep breath staring into his beautiful brown eyes. He told himself that it was okay, if he used the trip with Sakurai as a way of finding his master his master would be happy. He agreed to the trip and Sakura grinned telling him that he should get plenty of rest before the morning to make sure he was up for it.  When he went into the bedroom he was using he saw that a night light was already in the corner lighting up the room in a soft orange glow. Staring that the gentle light Masaki found it easy to fall to sleep and when he woke it was because Sakurai standing the doorway with a tray of breakfast and a change of clothes. After Masaki had eaten as much of the breakfast he could stomach he got dressed into the clothes Sakurai had brought him and they headed to the library.
