Sakurai sighed as he looked down at the mountain of paperwork that was covering his home desk. It had been two weeks since Masaki had seen his master again and realised that Nino and Sakurai was telling the truth about him. It had also been two weeks since he had started working from his small home office. He had to admit that he was worried about his boy, after they had come back from the park Masaki had become completely unresponsive. Mostly he just lay in his bedroom stroking the front of the book or the picture of dog Masaki. Sometimes at night Sakurai could hear Masaki talking to the picture and some of the things he told it were enough to make Sakurai throw up. The horror of what that man had put Masaki through had caused the CEO to cry a few times and he wanted to get him some real help but Masaki didn’t trust anybody. He was letting out another loud sigh when Aiba came in carrying a cup of steaming sweet smelling green tea and Sakurai thought that this had to be the only benefit of working from home.
“Are you okay young master?” She asked standing in front of him and Sakurai shook his head
“No… I can’t think of a way of getting through to Masaki again” He mumbled he was tempted to ring Matsumoto but he knew that every available moment the lawyer had was in building a case against the monster that had taken Masaki and the other little boy. He was working pro-bono for the boy’s family trying to keep all details as closed as possible. Masaki would have to make a statement at some point but that seemed more impossible to obtain by the day and Sakurai was scared that he really was going to lose his boy.
“He talks to the picture Masaki, he still believes what you told him about Masaki being there for you…” Aiba said softly as she placed the drink on his desk, Sakurai saw the kindly older lady was looking just as troubled as he was about the things they had overheard. “If I may though… I would suggest actually getting him a dog…A picture is fine but something that he could hold warmth… Something that would make him feel safe and protected… Who knows what he might be thinking is going to come after him in the night”
“We do have space for a dog” Sakurai murmured, the apartment was spacious and although he didn’t use it very often it had come with its own roof garden that had high metal mesh fences. The access was through stairs in what looked like a cupboard if they removed the door or installed a flap and the dog was trained it would be okay. Across the street was also a small park that Masaki could use to walk it “Do you think that would work?”
“It worked for somebody else” The housekeeper smiled patting his shoulder before nodding her head leaving his office. Sakurai thought about it for just a few moments as he sipped his tea while switching on his laptop. He ignored the work that he was meant to be doing and searched into different dog breeds trying to figure out which would be the best for Masaki and their living environment. After he had decided on a breed he made a search for available puppies, the only one he found was a breeder three hours away. His tea was cold by the time he finished speaking to the breeder but he drank it anyway before printing out some pictures the breeder sent him and getting up and going to Masaki’s bedroom.
Masaki was studying the book fairy tales when he went in and he looked up at him with empty almost soulless eyes. Sakurai stayed by the end of the bed as he studied him afraid that if he got to close he’d break him.
“Masaki…” He stared gently his fingers playing with the printed out pictures of the golden retriever puppies. “I have something to show you”
Masaki didn’t speak and Sakurai careful place the pictures down in front of him and he heard him let out a gasp.
“Puppies?” Masaki said slowly looking up from the photo a small tiny amount of life returning to his eyes.
“Yes… I think we should get a puppy but because I work a lot you would have to look after it and teach it… Would you like a real doggy Masaki?” Sakurai asked softly and Masaki looked back down at the pictures his fingers moving over the page of puppies
“But… But Sho-sama said that Masaki was the best doggy in the world…”
“And he was to me, but if you have a puppy it would be the best dog in the world to you…”
“Will I still be able to talk to doggy Masaki?” Masaki asked his eyes flicking to the photo on the side.
“Of course you can still talk to Masaki… but he would be happy if you had a friend of your own…Your dog will be loyal to you… You know golden retrievers are protective on their owners. They love them very much and would do anything for them” Sakurai told him, aware that he sounded like he was talking to a frightened child but he was aware that inside Masaki still was a scared little boy. “They would never let anybody hurt them…”
“And you don’t mind?” Masaki murmured his eyes back on the puppies and Sakurai nodded plucking up the courage to sit on the bed.
“Of course I don’t mind… We can go and pick the one you want up now if you want…But… they need a lot of looking after and love too… Your puppy would need you to look after it…”
“It… It would need me?”
“You will be it’s papa… It will need you more than anyone…” Sakurai nodded knowing that was the key to making Masaki agree, the teenager had a need to be needed and he guessed that was all he judged his self-worth on. Sakurai had tried telling him that he needed him but Masaki didn’t seem to be able to believe him. “So shall we go and fetch a puppy?”
“I… Thank-you…” Masaki nodded and Sakurai was pleased to see excitement in the teenager’s eyes.
“Get dressed then and we’ll go” Sakurai said getting up and about leave when Masaki grabbed his hand stopping him.
“Sh-o-san… Thank-you” The teenager whispered giving him the first smile that he had seen in two weeks and Sakurai couldn’t stop the grin that filled his face.
“You’re welcome, Masaki…” He said ruffling his hair “Now come on and lets go bring it home…”
Masaki was dressed and waiting before Sakurai had time to ring the driver and tell him to get the car out clutching the printouts. The drive was long but unlike the drive to Masaki’s master’s house Masaki was as almost bright as a button asking a million and one questions about puppies and how to look after them. His voice was still timid and shy but Sakurai smiled happily as he answered the seemingly never ending questions the best he could. The driver, Aiba’s husband had been informed of the truth about Masaki from his wife and was now watching him with a friendly fatherly eye through the mirror. They knew they were at the right place as soon as they arrived at the house. Tiny and loud barks filled the air and Masaki flinched away hiding behind Sakurai
“Don’t worry, they are just protecting the home…” A woman said in a bright booming voice coming down the garden path pushing the dogs lightly with her foot before unlocking the gate and allowing them in. “So I take it you’re here to see the Golden’s?”
“Yes…” Sakurai answered his hand automatically going to Masaki’s back to stroke him soothingly.
“They’re inside…” The breeder said beckoning them in. Sakurai followed guiding Masaki with him. The house was clean and smelt fresh which Sakurai thought was a minor miracle given the amount of well looked after dogs she had. There was a child’s play pen in the corner with eight healthy wriggling puppies running around chasing toys “Here they are…” She said looking at Masaki as she unhooked the gate and opened it “You’re going to be the papa ne? let’s see which one will bond to you…”
Masaki stepped into the pen slowly, eyes were shining as he looked down at the fluffy golden puppies that let out high pitched yapping barks as they clamoured over each other to get to him, their mum too was soon on her feet nuzzling and licking at Masaki’s hand. When Masaki let out a laugh Sakurai was positive that he was doing the doing the right thing
“He was the runt of the litter…He seem to be doing fine now but he will need extra love and care” The breeder said in a cheerful voice as Masaki picked up holding it against his chest. The puppy was wagging his tail furiously as he tried to nuzzle at his neck. Although he picked up and looked at the others, the runt stayed on his lap almost falling to sleep “I think he’s decided that he’s going home with you…” The breeder said and gave him a happy smile.
It only took a look at Masaki’s face to tell him that the runt was the one they would be taking home. He paid the woman who also gave them some toys and puppy food. While they were packing the car with the items Sakurai noticed that Masaki’s face had fallen again
“Masaki… What’s wrong?” He asked slowly as the driver opened the car door for them.
“I felt like I was the same as my master… picking something… Am I just like him?” Masaki whispered as he sat in the car hugging the puppy to his chest. Sakurai cursed himself for not realising how similar that would have been for his boy and quickly said
“No! You’re nothing like him Masaki… You’re going to take that puppy home and love him… Understand? He’s lucky that he’s going home with you…”Masaki still looked a little troubled but his eyes relaxed as he gave a small nod. “So what are you going name him?” Sakurai asked scratching the puppy behind the ear and Masaki chewed his lip looking down at the retriever who was staring at him with his big eyes Sakurai couldn’t help but think they made a perfect pair.
“Marquis…” He mumbled and Sakurai laughed thinking about the puss in boots story, it was a strange name but it had so much meaning to them both and he quickly took the puppies paw
“After the Marquis of Carabras?” he asked and Masaki gave a quick nod “Okay, Marquis… Nice to meet you… I’m Sho and your new papa is Masaki and he’s going to take good care of you…” Sakurai took great care not to say master or owner and he was quickly blown away when Marquis seemingly understood and licked Masaki’s chin and for the first time ever he got to see a huge Masaki smile. It was as perfect as he had thought, like a bright summer sun creeping over grey clouds, it was brief but Sakurai was more determined than ever to get it to stay.
