Jun was surprised that Sho stayed silent throughout his retelling of Nanami’s story and when he finished he looked at the twins thoughtfully rubbing his chin

“So I have sisters?” He asked and he seemed to like that idea

“A sister… Kazunari is male” Jun said putting his arm around Nino and Sho blinked very slowly nodding as he accepted that truth.

“I… see” He mumbled “So it makes sense…”

“I am sorry that I lied” Nino said quickly hanging his head, Jun wanted to say that it wasn’t his fault but even if he did Nino would just say that it was. Instead he followed his lover example and hung his head quickly surprising Sho more so when he said

“I am sorry too”

“I understand” Sho told them after a while “But now we need to know what we are going to do…”

Jun took Nino’s hand and Nino looked up at him, they stared at each other and the prince knew he was thinking the same thing.  While they had been wrapped up in their happiness other people were suffering and no matter what they couldn’t just let people suffer because of them.

“I cannot keep running…” Jun said turning to face Sho again “I will return with you to the palace”

“What do you mean you are going back? How is that going to get Masaki to smile at me again? If you go back and are not happy together he will never smile and I will have lost him… It would have been for nothing…”

“I will tell Masaki that you did your best…” Jun mused although he was shocked by his older brother’s outburst. He knew they were close but that was almost like the way he would treasure seeing Nino’s smile. He was almost certain that the way Sho was acting was the way he did when he thought that he was going to lose Nino. Sho too seemed to realise that his action was over the top and he quickly stared at the floor.

“When shall we leave, Jun-sama…” Nino asked softly and Jun was surprised and turned to stare at his lover

“You are not… I will go back with Sho but you are to stay here…” He said softly running a hand over his face.

“No, I cannot…” Nino protested quickly his voice sounding more male than Jun had ever heard it before and despite the situation Jun couldn’t help but think how wonderful that sound was.

“After everything we did to get here… All the pain you went through with your ankle…” He murmured

“You carried me on your back, Jun-sama… Through the thickest part of the forest you carried me and that was the biggest proof of your love I could have received…” Nino whispered as if forgetting they weren’t the only ones in the room. “And even now… You hear that my mother is in trouble and you would go back…Even though it is the last thing you really want…”

“I do it for you… But if you go back you will either be arrested or the owner of the hummingbird…”

“That bridge we must cross when we get to it… We cannot continue being selfish” Nino smiled taking his hand and kissing the palm lightly. “But I escaped at your side and I will always be by your side Jun-sama…”

“Kazu-kun” Jun whispered physically pulling Nino roughly to him and crushing their mouths together not wanting to believe that this maybe the last time he would be able to hold his lover.

“Then we should leave now…” Nagase said starling both of them into realising that they weren’t alone. “Kazumi will stay here with the child but I will not let you go back alone, you are my family and I will do what I can for my mother-in-law…”

Jun and Sho gave a nod of approval, Nagase was a noble he would have some say over how his mother-in-law was treated, and at the very least he might be able to offer some protection for Nino too.

“Thank-you…” Nino whispered lightly a beautiful smile gracing his face. Jun almost gave an audible sigh, no many times he saw his lover’s smiles he knew they would always captivate him. The horses from the carriages Sho arrived in were given space in the stables as Nagase brought out his own horses and attached them to the royal carriage. Jun looked up at Nino who was saying goodbye to his sister and niece.

“It was good to see you again sister” Nino murmured to Kazumi who smiled sadly as she rocked the baby back and forth.

“Please do not talk as if this is the last time I will see you” She begged she was half sobbing and Jun felt his stomach twist and lurch. “This cannot be as bad as we believe…”

“I am sure” Nino nodded though there was no conviction in his voice. Jun felt as if Nino believed that he was going back to die and Jun prayed that Kazumi was right and it wouldn’t be as bad as they thought.

Later at the palace…

Satoshi returned to the house ignoring his mother who was having an almost fit of hysterics on one of the chairs in the main entrance way, he asked one of the maid for his father and she motioned him into the relaxation room. He gripped Emi’s hand tightly as he went into the room and saw his father laying on the floor with his head in Nanami’s lap. Masaki was sat close by wringing out fabric in cold water

“Nanami-san, you helped my brothers get away where did you take them?”

“And why do you want that information?” The Emperor asked in a breathless voice opening one of his fading brown eyes.

“I have to make up for what I have done… To both Jun and Ninomiya as well as Sho…” Satoshi mumbled and Masaki’s head snapped up and his eyes glinted dangerously, the first prince gave a sigh he had no idea how he was going to sort out that mess but he would have to think about it soon.

“They are at Kazunari’s sister’s husband’s house…” Nanami answered softly as she placed the fresh damp cloth on the emperor’s forehead and gave Masaki the old one.  Satoshi nodded slowly continuing to play with Emi’s hand for support.

“I see… Is it far?” He mused thoughtfully playing with the thin fingers

“No, sire, a carriage will only take a few hours…Satoshi-ouji… What will happen to my children?” She whispered

“They are my brother and sister… There is the matter of Jun and Ninomiya’s attraction that we will have to deal with… And from what I understand the owner of the hummingbird has started to ask questions of his own…” Satoshi answered and Nanami gave a small incline of her head and Satoshi wondered if somehow she could sense a change in him. He hoped so, she too was someone that he had mixed feelings about but he felt as if he owed her an apology.

“Did Sho-chan tell you about Nanami-san?” Masaki asked and Satoshi shook his head slowly

“No, he would not betray you that way…” He answered and Masaki nodded a small smile forming on his face. Satoshi felt ripples of sickness running down his spine as he saw the look of happiness that filled his brother’s face. The Jun and Nino situation was harmless compared to the that one he thought, silently  praying that there was a way out of it that wouldn’t affect the families name or hurt his brothers but it seemed near impossible.

“I should have known he would not” Masaki whispered happily “I have to apologise to him…”

“Later perhaps…” Satoshi said praying that they hadn’t already given into the feelings they had for each other, “Masaki take a carriage and go to the address…”

“Yes” Masaki nodded running out and Satoshi let go of Emi’s hand to go to his father’s side

“Can you forgive an old man for his mistakes?”

“If you can forgive me mine, Father”

“Please do not misunderstand… My mistakes are not you children, the happiest days of my life were when I welcomed each of you into this world and that includes Jun…”

“And also Kazunari and Kazumi?”

“Yes… On equal measure…” The emperor nodded with a tired smile. Satoshi was about to speak again when the door opened and Masaki came back in.

“I thought you were going to bring them back…” He said and Masaki’s face split into a huge grin.

“I was going but I do not need too they are here…”
