Jun blinked wordlessly at him for a moment and Aiba seemed shocked, Jun was tempted to deny it, but if it was really that noticeable there really wouldn’t be a point in doing so.
“I’m I really that obvious?” He asked, his voice coming out as a shaky sigh
“Little bit, yeah” Nino nodded smiling, it was filled with understanding though and Jun didn’t feel guilty “So what was his name?”
“Masaki… Aiba Masaki…” He said slowly, staring at the park that was slowly getting darker as the sun went down.
“What happened to him?”
“He got sick two years ago and never recovered…” Jun said his fingers going around the locket tightly, even after two years he couldn’t bring himself to say the words ‘He died’.
“It’s okay, Jun being dead isn’t that bad… In fact most of the time I felt like I was flying…” Aiba told him with a laugh. “It’s fun”
“That’s rough, were you together long?”
“Since my first year of college” Jun nodded six years they’d had six years together and then it was gone.
“Sorry… This must be painful for you…” Nino whispered and Jun had to disagree, it was almost nice to talk about it with someone that understood, it had been two years since his death, two years was felt like nothing but everyone just expected him to be able to pick himself up and carry on. Even Aiba was trying to get him to do that, but he had been the biggest part of his life for six years and then suddenly it was cut away from him. Aiba was silent as he thought all of this, but Jun knew he could hear him, he wasn’t trying to make excuses but he wanted Aiba to know how he felt. “What was he like?”
“Masaki… He… He was always so full of life, he could almost drive you insane with it he was that enthusiastic about things… Not just big things, even random stupid little things made him have a big reaction… We would be walking through a field and he’d see common butterfly and he would act like we had just proved the existence of fairies”
“Hey I wasn’t that bad!” Aiba spoke at last in a pouty tone in his mind and to Jun it felt that he had turned his back on him.
“He was also overly emotional got upset over little things too” Jun chuckled and he got another huff in his brain. He blinked when he realised that Nino was smiling at him.
“He sounds like he was an amazing guy” The games designer said and Jun nodded
“He is… Was…” he said painfully
“I’m sure we would have been good friends” Nino grinned,
“Yay, I think so too… Nino-chan is great… see Jun-kun… He doesn’t think I was annoying!”
“He’s neve-…”Jun stopped realising that he was going to look like he was talking to himself again “I think he would have liked you too”
“Really, I’m glad you think so… Though he does sound like the kind of person that I would have teased too…” Nino admitted and Jun liked that honesty, it felt more real than just saying it because it was the right thing to do.
“I used to tease him a lot too” He admitted with a laugh as he remembered back to their first few months together in college,
“He does sound the type of person that would be easily teased, but that kind of person makes you want to look after them too” Nino murmured softly and Jun sensed he wasn’t completely talking about Aiba anymore.
“Was your guy like that too?” he asked softly
“Nah… He was the type of guy that nothing ever seemed to bother…” Nino smiled shaking his head “His name was Ohno Satoshi, he was the S in ‘SK’
“How long were you together?”
“Since high school…He was in the year above me but I skipped up a year” he answered staring at the half eaten hamburger in his hands.
“What happened to him?”
“Three years ago he was mugged on his way home, just some random kid that needed money… He got jumpy when he heard sirens… It wasn’t even the police but he killed my Samii anyway…” Nino let out a long sigh before he finished off the hamburger that he had been nursing.
“And you’re already over it?” Jun asked without thinking, his heart stabbing with guilt when he saw the familiar pain flash in his companion’s eyes.
“Nope, not over it… but what Samii loved most about me was my charming personality,” Nino said with a huge grin that faulted after a while becoming more of sad smile “Nah, seriously… the truth is, he was everything to me, I loved him with all my heart and it hurts to think about letting him go but if I don’t start living for myself again I might as well be in the ground next to him and that’s the last thing Samii would want…”
“See… At least he understands that…” Aiba said and Jun ignored him
“So what was he like?”
“Amazing, he was the true genius… Nobody else could see that, to most people they thought that he was just letting life pass him by, but he was always just waiting for the right moment to strike. The artwork for ‘Konseki’ was all based on his paintings and he was the second singer, he could do anything that he wanted to do, when I first met him I knew he was going to make it big. For some reason he picked me to go along with him… At first we had nothing but dreams and ideas, but somehow he made them real…” Nino stopped and dived into the bag for some more hamburgers, he handed one to Jun who took it realising that it had gone slightly cold. Nino didn’t seem to care though and was eating his happily. Aiba was crying in his mind and although he knew why he had to ask, ‘Are you okay?’
“It was so sad! You have to be happy together! Both of you! Don’t you think it would be perfect if you got together? You could help each other…It’s so romantic”
“Do you always have to be so romantic?” he mumbled without thinking. After everything he had just said about Aiba, his boyfriend was still trying to push him with someone else.
“Sorry?” Nino asked and Jun blinked realising that he must have said it aloud.
“Um… He sounds like a great guy” Jun offered though he knew the older guy wouldn’t believe him. Nino gave him a doubtful look but smiled nodding
“He was…” He said and a silence crept around the car again unsettling them both until Nino made a loud voice screwing up the empty fast food bag “This became really depressing date, ne?”
“Sorry…”
“It’s not your fault… Maybe next time we can have an actual plan of what we want to do?”
“You want a next time?” Jun asked in amazement and Aiba made an annoyed noise in his head, telling him that was the wrong question to ask.
“I guess… It would be pointless ne?” Nino mumbled, “Anyway I have work tomorrow so I’d better be getting home… Maybe just once around the city this time I doubt that your car will make another five laps…”
It sounded easy and light like most of the comments, Nino seemed to make but Jun seemed to sense that he was a little upset that he didn’t want another date. He couldn’t find a way to take back his question though and in the end Jun just nodded starting the car and heading back to the mansion. This time Nino pressed a remote control to open the gates and soon he was getting out of the car still holding the paper bag. He looked so much smaller against the big house and Jun thought of all his memories that were crammed into his apartment of Aiba, and he wondered how many painful memories there were for Nino in that house.
“Ne, Nino…” Jun called feeling that somehow he had to make up for the way he had acted, as Nino started walking towards his front door, the games designer turned his eyebrow raised “If… If I asked you for a redo of this date would you let me?”
“A redo?” Nino asked in surprise. While Aiba started bouncing up and down happily.
“We could pretend that this one didn’t happen… This one wasn’t our first date… Would you let me try?”
