Matsumoto Jun checked his appearance for the eighth time making sure not even a hair was out of place and then sat back down looking at the clock. He glared to the empty room when he saw that his blind date the guy his oldest friend had set him up with was almost an hour late. With a sigh he checked his phone making sure he had the right time and seeing he did he glared even more. He hadn’t even wanted the date but his friend had insisted, the guy in question was her boyfriend’s best friend. Finally the doorbell rang and he almost tripped over himself to answer it.

What he saw was nothing like what he was expecting. The guy was shorter that then he was dressed in jeans and a leather biker top, he looked cute but other than that they really didn’t seem like they would match. He looked down at his own immaculate outfit, correcting himself quickly. No… There was no way they could match.

“You’re Ninomiya Kazunari?” he asked almost hoping that he was wrong, maybe this was just some pizza delivery guy with the wrong address

“Yeah but people call me ‘Nino’” The small guy nodded in a similar tone of voice and somehow it seemed that he knew the date was going downhill fast.

“Nino?” Jun frowned he tended not to trust people with nicknames, much less people with overly cute nicknames, but ‘Nino’ just grinned

“Yep… So you’re Matsumoto Jun, ne? Sorry… am I late?”

“Just by an hour” Jun said coldly and the cute/badly dressed guy gave an attempted apologetic smile

“Sorry I got a little lost looking for your apartment… You look great by the way…” Nino offered and Jun tried not to glare, prepared to at least give him a chance before he decided to call Mao and completely lay into her about her poor choice in men. “So shall we go?” Nino asked and Jun grabbed his jacket and followed him down.

During the short elevator ride and walk outside they attempted some small talk but failed miserably and Jun just wanted to have dinner and forget any of this ever happened.

“So where’s your car?” Jun asked looking around and the smaller guy picked up a helmet looking a little sheepish,

“You’re looking at it… Well it’s my bike…Isn’t she beautiful?” He said and Jun stared in horror at the machine in front of them, there was no way in hell he was going to get on that thing in the clothes he was wearing.

“It’s very nice but… Maybe we should take my car…” He said motioning to the sensible grey car parked just behind the bike. Nino pulled a face but gave a nod locking his helmet under his seat. Jun tried not to give a sigh of relief as they went to the car. They weren’t in it for more than five minutes before Jun realised that there wasn’t actually a plan of where they were going or what they were doing.

“Sho said you were the planning type” Nino shrugged flashing another of his cheesy grin just as his mobile started ringing with what had to be game theme of some kind.

“You should answer that…”

“Nah, it’s fine” Nino said with a shrug “It’ll go off” It didn’t go off though and in the end the smaller guy answered it quickly “Hello? Oh… um… hi…No… Yeah I had fun too… Hmm… Now’s not a very… Really? I see… That does sound interesting… Yeah tomorrow…”

“So you have plans tomorrow?” Jun asked bristling with anger that he had the nerve to make another date when he still hadn’t finished this one.

“Just a friend…” Nino shrugged as if it was unimportant “Anyway have you decided where…”

“You know… This isn’t going to work…” Jun said pinching his nose and Nino agreed completely and all too easily in Jun’s opinion

“You’re right, they just thought, they’re both fags I bet they would work together…”  

“Yeah as if…”

“Yep, in your dreams…”

“My dreams? You’re the one that was making a ‘play date’ while still on a date…”

“Technically the date actually hadn’t even started… We only just got in your car… And we both knew this wasn’t going to work…”

“At least I was going to give it a chance, our friends set us up I thought we should give it a chance” Jun grumbled he wouldn’t have cared but Nino’s attitude was really starting to piss him off. “I realise now I shouldn’t have bothered…”

“Ah well, you live and learn” Nino grinned opening the car door and pulling out his phone even before he got out of the car. Jun gripped the steering wheel tightly, as the shorter guy dialled his phone and it wasn’t before he heard a laugh and a “my evenings just opened up… sure I can come right over…”

“Fuck!” Jun swore pulling out his own phone as Nino got onto his motorbike and drove off. He dialled Mao’s number and his friend soon answered,

“Hey, Jun what’s up, I thought you were on a date…”

“A date? We made it to the fucking car…”

“What did you do?”

“What did I do? I didn’t do anything, he was an hour late and then he hadn’t made any plans what’s so ever… But the worst thing was he made plans with someone else while I was there… How the hell could you have thought we’d be good together?” Jun snapped still picturing Nino’s smirking face in his head which just served to keep him pissed off.

“I’m sorry okay? Sho said that you would be a really cute couple… I’m really sorry…I’ll make it up to you I swear…”

“Just make sure I never have to see that smug faced little bastard again…” Jun mumbled almost hitting his wheel in frustration. He heard Mao promise something vague but he should have known that it wasn’t going to work like that.

Mao became engaged to Sho at the engagement party Nino turned up arm in arm with two fairly hot guys and started making out on the dance floor while Jun’s date insulted Mao’s mother in law and threw up all over his shoes. At their wedding Nino was his best man while he was the ‘Maid of honour’. At some point during the night Mao’s grandmother opened the door to find Nino in the middle of making out with what looked like two waiters and a waitress while his date was eating the wedding cake before the bride and groom had even cut it.

The worst thing was that Nino seemed to be able to completely charm everyone into thinking that what he was doing was cute and sweet and it seemed that only Jun had the problem with him. Mao and Sho eventually had a baby girl Ami, and they were both made her godparents. On the day of her christening she decided to coo oh so sweetly in Nino’s arms and then throw up all over his suit when it was his turn to hold her.

After Ami’s first birthday though, things on his end were looking up, a cute short tanned guy had been coming into the bakery he owned every day, for cheese cake and coffee. By some miracle he had sort of half agreed to go on a date with him, he was just trying to pick out and outfit to wear for his date when his phone rang,

“Hello…” He said brightly, hoping it wasn’t his date calling to cancel

“Hey… Jun…” Nino said and Jun was about to hang up the phone with a hiss when he heard him beg “Wait don’t hang up… You have to get to Cherry Blossom Hospital… There’s been an accident… Sho and Mao…”

That was all he heard before he dropped his phone and ran out of his apartment. When he arrived the first thing he saw was Nino crouched on the floor hugging his knees none of the normal smug self confidence in his face.

“No… No” Jun repeated seeing the tear tracks down the brats face, Nino stood up and quickly pulled him into a hug and holding each other tightly they cried on to each other’s shoulders “Ami… What about Ami?”

“She wasn’t with them… She was with a babysitter” Nino told him reassuringly against his ear and Jun gave a sigh. “She’s been taken in by child services they said that they would ring in the morning…”

“Ring? Ring where?” Jun asked pulling away wiping his eyes so he could look at him properly.

“Sho’s house…” Nino answered slowly “They wanted to talk to us both so I said we’d be there…”

“… Okay” Jun agreed and they left the hospital to reluctantly go to the house of their best friends. It was eerily quiet and lacked any of the warm they had come to expect here, for a while they just stood in the entrance way, looking at each other until Nino broke the silence by suggesting that Jun take the guest room “What about you? You could use their…”

“I’ll sleep in the sitting room… There’s the fold out bed…” Nino said and Jun nodded going upstairs. The next morning when he was awoken by the phone it took him a few moments to realise where he was and what had happened, when the reality hits him he has to stop himself crying so he can answer the call. After he’s taken it and processed the information he shuffled downstairs to make coffee. He’s in the middle of his third cup when Nino came in just wearing a pair of boxers

“Did anyone call?” He asks with a yawn and Jun nodded draining what’s left of his coffee

“The lawyer, he’ll be here in a few minutes there’s some paperwork he needs us to go through” he said and Nino gave a blank nod of agreement and wondered into the kitchen. Everything around them feels flat and unreal. It feels like any moment Sho and Mao are going to walk back in and it was going to be just another joke by Nino.

As soon as the lawyer came and they settled in the living room though Jun knew that it wasn’t a joke and he was tempted to grip Nino’s hand tightly and he gave into that feeling, linking their fingers as the lawyer started speaking.

“I’m sorry for your loss” He said and both men nodded thanking him politely. “I understand that this is a difficult situation for you both but we have to act quickly so that we can do what’s best for their child Ami”

“Of course” Nino and Jun agreed with synchronised nods and the lawyer gave a smile

“Sakurai Sho-san and Sakurai Mao-san put you down as the guardian for Ami” he told them softly shuffling through his paperwork that had scattered out over the coffee table.

“Who?” Nino and Jun asked looking at each other before looking back at the lawyer, who gave another smile holding out a form

“You… Both of you…”
