Sakurai Sho was a maker vampire, which basically meant that he could make humans into vampires. So that meant he was loathed by his own kind. After his parents had been killed he had made himself a wonderer going from house to house, never staying for more than four months in each. It was less risky than drawing the unwanted attention of vampires or humans. He knew that there were some vampire families, like the Ninomiya’s in Tokyo who believed that the vampires should come out of hiding and rule over the humans. Sakurai thought that was bollocks. For both species to survive it was obvious to him that they had to work together, to create a safe haven for all. Maybe he was just an idealist, it was well known that noble vampires as whole were arrogant to the point it was a characteristic. There would never be a vampire noble that loved a human enough to bring about a change just so they could be together, but at least it was something nice to dream about as he wondered the long roads.
He was making one of his journey’s to his autumn home when he was passing through the outskirts of a village. Fire and smoke ripped up from the house and the maker vampire Sakurai was positive that he could smell the corpses of at least two humans. He sighed muttering a short prayer to himself before turning about to walk away. A baby’s screaming filled the air and without a second thought in his head he dropped his bag and ran into the house. His vampire senses leading up a set of stairs in to a room that was decorated with cute bunny rabbits and bright yellow birds. Above the bed in bright letters was the name ‘Masaki’
“Masaki-kun, ne?” He said picking up the screaming baby and holding him close. The baby snuffled a little but stopped his tears looking up at him with big brown eyes. “I’m Sho… I’m going to get you out of here okay?” he looked around hissing as he realised that the door was now blocked by flames. He would survive them but there was no way that a human infant would. The only other option was the window and he couldn’t be sure if he would lend correctly. He wrapped his arms protectively around the tiny baby and with a run and a jump smashed through the window landing on the soft earth below with a loud thud. Masaki gave a whimpering cry but when Sakurai checked him over he saw that he was unharmed. The vampire walked quickly from the house not wanting any debris to fall and harm Masaki. Soon he could hear the sound of sirens and he knew that the fire department was on its way. He put the baby down on the earth and retreated into the woods to wait for a human to find him not wanting to explain when and how he had gotten the baby out of the house.
“The Aiba’s” One of the fireman said and to Sakurai’s horror he realised that it was a vampire, he searched his brain and realised that the village he was in was a pilot programme for a full vampire take over. There was no chance that they would take care of the baby they would kill him first.
“Shit” He swore under his breath changing his scent quickly before stepping forwards to collect the baby from where he had placed him and trying to make it look like he had just been taking a walk with his son. He ran over to the firemen pretending to be breathless “What happened? The Aiba’s are they okay?”
“Calm down, sir” The ‘officer’ said turning his nose up at them and Sakurai knew he was doing the right thing for Masaki. “Can you explain why you were here?”
“My son couldn’t sleep so I thought I’d take him for a walk… A breath of fresh air, you know? I was walking through the woods when I saw the fire, Christ! Are the Aiba’s in there? What about their son? Is he alive?” Sakurai gasped trying to really sell his act of concerned neighbour. “He’s only about the same age as my boy Shu…”
“I’m sorry sir, but anybody in that house wouldn’t have survived… Much less a child as small as your own” The vampire fireman said in a voice that clearly stated ‘just get the hell out of here’
“That’s awful!” Sakurai gasped continuing to play his role, but feeling genuinely sorry for Masaki’s parents. They were obviously a young couple, maybe just starting out on their lives together with their son and now it was gone. Masaki let out a whimper snuffling up against his chest Sakurai tried not to smile too much at the tiny warmth and slightly wet baby.
“Yes, it’s a terrible loss, but may I suggest taking your son away now? This place could collapse at any moment and you should be as far away as possible…”
“I… Of course… But is there anything I can do?” He said knowing that there wouldn’t be but feeling the need to ask.
“Taking your son away would be the best thing now sir, we wouldn’t want another tragedy…”
“I-I… Guess…” Sakurai said nodding with a great show of reluctance taking another look at the house before walking back the way he had come carrying his ‘son’ gently in his arms. Masaki cooed up at him, and Sakurai gave a smile “I guess a child won’t be so hard to have” he mumbled to himself as he collected his bag. There was a chance that there were other Aiba relatives in the area that would be willing to take him in but judging that they were basically livestock for vampires he thought Masaki stood a better chance with him than them. He picked up his bag and hurried away as fast as he could without raising suspicion. As soon as he cleared the village he sped up moving quickly to the next town and went to a supermarket to buy nappies, food and baby clothes. He fed from one of the shop assistants that was cooing over Masaki and then headed to his home near the mountains.
Masaki was a relatively good baby, only making noise when he was hungry or needed changing. Their lives fell into an easy pattern and Sakurai could really believe that little Masaki was his son. He kept the boy’s name the same and when they were heading to his winter house he even went back to the house. There was just a shell of a place left and a shiver ran through him as he wondered if the vampires had even buried the bodies. He found a few pictures in the ash and put them in his bag, determined that Masaki would know who his birth parents had been. He said a few words over the house again as Masaki cooed against his neck his tiny hands pawing at his hair.
The years past and they continued to move from house to house Masaki started getting bigger, finding his only legs but also his voice and Sakurai had to laugh when he shouted out his first words ‘Shoe-Tan’. The vampire did his best to learn as much as he could to answer all the questions his bright cheerful little Masaki could throw at him. He was a happy child that loved animals, their houses were always full of some form of tiny furry creatures that either squeaked, barked or meowed at him. They couldn’t keep them for long but Masaki was always delighted to have them whenever he could. It wasn’t until he was about six that he started asking questions
“Sho-chan, rabbits have both a papa and a mama ne?” He asked as he was tying a ribbon around a speckled grey rabbits ear and giving it a fetching green bow.
“Yes” Sakurai answered as he stirred the tin of soup. He had a feeling where this was going and he had the answers ready, he just wasn’t sure if Masaki was ready for them.
“So… Does that make Sho-chan both my mama and my papa?” Masaki asked looking up from the rabbit and the vampire blinked in surprise. He had given the human the photos and explained some of what had happened but to Masaki his parents were just pictures in a book, like the man in the moon or humpty dumpty, there was no connection to them. It didn’t help that Sakurai couldn’t even tell him their names. He had wanted to go back and ask the locals about the Aiba’s but the village had contracted an ‘illness’ four years ago and now it was mostly a ghost town
“For as long you need me to be yes, I’m your mama and papa, Ma-chan” he promised and smiled as the boy beamed at him before going back to his rabbit. Sakurai had hoped that they could continue their peaceful lives but a few years later the vampires took over.
