The heat was intense as they headed to the hospital adding to the uncomfortable feelings he was having, Nino seriously wanted to bail out, but Matsu was there and he really refused to look ‘uncool’ in front of his princess. He wanted a cigarette more than he had all day but he had meant it when he said he would quit for this man that was walking beside him. He knew he should feel a little weird about bring a guy to meet the woman that thought she should be allowed to call him mother but he couldn’t, as far as he was concerned Matsu and Sakurai was his real family if she didn’t like it she could lump it. Ohno had told him the room number and they climbed the stairs instead of waiting for the elevator not wanting to be confined in a tight place with a bunch of old people. He paused again as they reached the ICU, taking a steadying breath he signalled for the nurse to allow them entry and slowly a beep sounded and the door opened.

“Name of patient?”

“Um… Ohno Reiko… I’m her son…” Nino muttered licking his lips a little, the nurse gave him a stupid sympathetic smile before saying

“She’s been moved into a side room, room 2B, Ohno-san… I’m afraid that she doesn’t have much time left…” The nurse told him softly and Nino was about to correct her but decided that it was pointless

“Thank-you” He said bowing his head politely and then glanced at Matsu, guilt coiling in his chest at his own selfishness. He shouldn’t have brought a teenager here much less one that had already watched his own parents dying when he was young. After the nurse had bustled away he turned fully to his lover holding his hand tightly “Princess, you should go and wait in the cafeteria…”

“No, I’m here with you and I’m staying with you… I’ll be okay Kazu…” Matsu replied stubbornly and Nino knew that he wouldn’t be able to persuade him otherwise and slowly they made their way to 3B. Through the little glass window Nino was given the first glimpse of his mother in a stupidly long time. She was a small as he remembered, at least a small as him and Ohno, but the big bed and frail appearance made her seem even smaller. Ohno was sat by her bed along with a man that Nino recognised as Mr Ohno, his hair was greyer than the last time they had met but, even looking as devastated as he did, Nino could see the kind glint in his eyes. Very slowly he pushed open the door and stepped inside followed closely by his teenaged lover.

 Ohno and his father turned to look up at them and Nino apologised softly, but they both shook their heads giving him sad smiles though Ohno did seem a little angry that he had brought Matsu with him.

“Her condition worsened this morning, she’s still with us but just barely” Mr Ohno told him in a similar gentle sleepy voice as his son and Nino nodded looking down at the body, His mother, on the bed. Her face was mostly hidden by a breathing mask, but Nino could see that it was still so similar to his own, her hair was greying and there were a few lines but it was the same face he could remember from his childhood. He gripped Matsu’s hand tightly, glad that his lover had refused to leave, he wasn’t sure what the emotions were, that were in his chest but he knew one of them was fear.  The whirl of machines hammered into his head and Mr Ohno offered his seat that was next to her saying softly “She was asking for you yesterday, maybe you should let her hear your voice…”

“I…” Nino muttered stopping as there was a whirling from the machines his mother was hooked up to and more fear crawled its way into his heart.

“Don’t worry… It does that from time to time” Mr Ohno told him gently and Nino gave another nod. He took the chair that was offered reluctantly, with Matsu standing beside him. This was closer than he had wanted to get and he was relieved that her eyes were closed “We’re not sure of how much she’s aware of, but the doctors say that one of the last senses to go is hearing”

“I… See” Nino said not sure what Ohno or his step-father were expecting of him, he thought that perhaps that they thought there would be tears or some other big emotional out pouring but if he was honest he didn’t feel anything close to that. He thought that maybe there was something wrong with him but at the moment all he felt was pity for the small woman behind the mask.

“Mum, Kazu’s here… Just like you wanted…” Ohno said in an almost broken voice and then Nino did feel an emotion other than pity. Although his feelings for this woman were next to none his brother did love her deeply and taking that in he did his best for Ohno. He took the hand that was closest to him and for the first time in his life he realised that she had the same stubby fingers he did it was a weird connection but it was a connection.

“Hey… Um… It’s Kazunari…” He said awkwardly and was happy when he felt Matsu’s long fingers on his shoulder comforting him gently. Ohno gave him a half smile and he was encouraged to continue “I’m sorry that I didn’t come sooner… But I’ve always been wilful… I think you would understand that…”

“Kazu…” Ohno mumbled but Mr Ohno held up his hand to stop him and Nino was surprised.

“It’s okay Kazu, say what you feel…” He said with a nod “Would you like us to go out while you say your piece?”

“I… Um… Yes please” He said he couldn’t understand why the older man was letting him do this but he was grateful. Ohno and his father left soon after and Nino turned back to his mother, “You know I hated you with all my heart, you know for years I almost wanted to see you like this, I wanted to see you suffer. I always wanted to know why I was so easy to forget about, I was your son and you just packed up and left. Satoshi he says that you were a good mother to him, so that means there was something wrong with me right? There must be or you would have been a good mother to me too…” Nino said vaguely aware of Matsu telling him that wasn’t true, he was on a roll now and he couldn’t stop. “You know on every single one of my birthdays I wished you would come back or even send me a card… But you never did… for years I hoped and then I decided that it didn’t matter, you weren’t worth it...But a few years ago when I got the letter after all those years saying that ‘you’ wanted to see me I was kind of happy but again that was a bust, just another in the long line of disappointment you’ve given me… You didn’t even come out of the kitchen to greet me, and now I’m being forced to sit here... Well you can forget the idea that I came for you because I didn’t, I came for Satoshi and for my princess, my Jun. Satoshi and Ohno-san said you were asking for me, I’m guessing that it’s to ease some of the guilt you’re feeling well the truth is…” Nino said sighing slowly as he felt Jun’s nails almost digging into his arm “You should let it go… I forgive you, whatever reasons you had the truth is if you hadn’t have gone my life might have been different now but I don’t think it would have been better… Noa-san, Kumi, Sakurai, Satoshi and My princess… None of them would have happened so I guess it’s okay for us both to let go ne?” he asked giving the hand a squeeze. “I hope you find peace, mum…”

He stood up and went to the door aware that the Ohno’s wouldn’t be too far away. He had said more than he thought he would and somehow his heart did feel lighter now. As they came back in Mr Ohno gave him a warm smile touching his shoulder lightly

“You needed to say what you had to say” He told him in that gentle voice, “For your sake I hope it brought you some kind of peace, Kazu”

“Dad” Ohno muttered and Nino heard the shrill beeping of a machine, he bolted into the hallway flagging a nurse who came running ushering them all out. Matsu found him in the corridor and held him tightly as Ohno and his father held hands waiting for the door to open, which it did moments later

“I’m sorry, she’s gone” The nurse said and Nino was stunned to realise that tears were sneaking their way down his cheeks
